Viognier was once a fairly common grape, though it is now a rare white grape grown almost exclusively in the northern RhÃ´ne regions of France. Around the 1960s, the grape was almost extinct when there were only eight acres in Northern RhÃ´ne. The popularity of the wine, as well as its price, has risen and thus the number of plantings have increased. RhÃ´ne now has over 740 acres planted.

Catie is Sa ...morera Leeâ€™s daughter. The crop this year was smaller than usual (as was the 2004) producing fruit with more concentrated flavors.

Viognier (V-Own-Yeah) is an enjoyable white wine whose grapes have their origin in the Rhone Valley Appellations of Condrieu and Chateau Grillet. Viognier is also blended with Syrah in producing Cote Rotie wines. Food friendly, Viognier pairs well with fish, spicy foods, Asian infusions, crab and lobster, rice pudding or just drink it as an aperitif. Serve slightly chilled to enhance the fruit characteristics of the wine.

The 2005 Viognier has a complex nose of apricot, peach, pear, citrus and wild flowers. The mouth feel is harmoniously balanced between richness and lively acidity. The finish is marked by long-lasting flavors reflecting the fruity and floral aromas.

Temperate, sunny days and cool nights extend the growing season and provide ...morethe hang time necessary to concentrate these grapesâ€™ exotic aromas. Hand-picked on September 27th, 2005 at 25.5Âº Brix, at optimum ripeness, the grape clusters were immediately pressed to release their tart, straw-colored juice. After cold-settling for 24 hours in a tank, the juice was racked to neutral (4 year old) French oak barrels for fermentation, and stirred weekly on its lees to enhance the richness and viscosity of the mid-palate. Then, the wine was racked off of its lees and was bottled on July 7th, 2006. After eight months of bottle aging, this perfumey, slightly off-dry wine is ready to be enjoyed.
