Foxen’s Tinaquaic Vineyard is the region’s only dry-farmed vineyard—which means that it receives absolutely no irrigation. Relying on only the water that Mother Nature provides, our estate vineyard must be meticulously farmed with the yields kept at extremely low levels. Because of this, and the fact that the grapes grow on the original rootstocks, Foxen is rewarded with grapes that display distinctive and intense varietal character.
The soil composition ranges from sandy to clay loam in this hillside vineyard that is perched about 500 feet above the winery and the Foxen Canyon floor. There are currently six acres of Chardonnay and a mere 1.5 acres each of Syrah and Cabernet Franc. | Santa Maria, CA Phone: (805) 937-4251 Website: http://www.foxenvineyard.com Appellation: Santa Maria Valley Tasting Room: Open Daily

2006 Tinaquaic Vineyard Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley

Chenin Blanc
|
2005 Chenin Blanc Santa Maria Valley
This is “Ernesto’s” 39th year—and our third vintage since we began exclusively farming it. The wine was 50% barrel fermented, which contributes texture and richness, and 50 ... more% tank fermented to maintain freshness and purity of fruit. The natural acidity of the Chenin Blanc grape enables it to age gracefully, and with ageing it develops more honeysuckle aromas and flavors. In its youth, this wine shows lots of anise, pear and quince—with nice crispness. The “Ernesto” is great with oysters, melon with prosciutto, apple fennel salad, and cool soups.

Pinot Noir
|
2005 Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley
“The 2005 Vintage for Pinot Noir was perfect. Beautiful September days, not heat waves or thunderstorms. We picked ripe(not over-ripe)fruit at leisure. The wines were showy in ba ... morerrel early on, and continue to be in bottle, definitely more down to earth than the '03 and '04 vintages. It displays a mouthful of cherries, black raspberries and hard spice(cinnamon, clove and cardamom), with a firm, sexy middle and creamy finish. This Julia's is so pretty you are not going to want to put it down.”

Pinot Noir
|
2005 Sea Smoke Vineyard Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills
“Of all the Sea Smoke Pinot Noir’s, this vintage most resembles Burgundy. It is less 'over the top' than the 2004 vintage—much more focused and defined (less wild and crazy). ... more Beautiful fruit meets designer barrels (Francois Freres, 75% new). It may be hard to extremely hard to cellar this, as it is so adjectively good right now!”

Supple and velvety in ... morethe mouth, this is an elegant wine. Typical of our Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir, this wine displays up front fruit—yet serious and complex at the same time.”

Cuvee
|
2004 Cuvee Jeanne Marie Santa Ynez Valley
Planted in 1999 by Dick and Jenny, the Williamson-Doré Vineyard is located in the eastern portion of the Santa Ynez Valley. This could actually be labeled as Grenache since it mak ... morees up 80% of the blend, but then my mom’s name wouldn’t be on the label. There are plenty of bright red-fruit (pomegranate and watermelon) notes that make it easily accessible now. Yet there is some deeper, dark “stuff” hanging around out back that will bode well for some aging.
