Sangiovese is a red wine grape variety originating in Italy. It is most famous as the main component of the Chianti blend in Tuscany, but winemakers outside Italy are starting to experiment with it. Young sangiovese has fresh fruity flavours of strawberry and a little spiciness, but it readily takes on oaky, even tarry, flavours when aged in barrels.

Sangiovese, also known as Brunello or Sangioveto, is the primary grape in the famous Chianti appellation in Italy. Sangiovese was brought to California by Italian immigrants, many ...moreof whom settled in the Napa Valley. With the many micro climates that exist in the Napa Valley, Sangiovese thrives and produces great wines. Rutherford Hill’s 2003 Sangiovese shows the full potential of this varietal. Ruby in color, this wine has an aroma profile of strawberry jam, ripe plums that open up into cherries with notes of hazelnut and caramel. In the pallet, the wine is smooth with alcohol and acids existing in complete harmony with the tannins to create finesse in the finish. In other words, “Alzi il vostro vetro a questo vino!” (Raise your glass to this wine!)

This wine contains the predominant grape found in the Chianti wine of Italy, but ours is light pink with crisp citrus and strawberry aromas and flavors. It is a dry, well-balanced wine that should be served slightly chilled. It is wonderful for sipping when you want a light, fruity patio or picnic wine. It also goes well with lighter dishes such as shell fish, chicken and turkey. This is a great holiday wine when you are trying to please a variety of different palates. It is definitely a people pleaser. For a surprise, also try it with spicy food.

The mouth is silky and slightly exotic with mild pomegranate flavors. The finish literally makes your mouth water. It drinks well now, and should still shine in 8-10 years.

The 2004 Laraine Sangiovese is blended with small quantities of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon to increase its color, density and structure. It is a lively wine which will accompany grilled meats and fish. I suggest you chill the wine slightly and enjoy it while cooking.
