2006 Zinfandel/Petite Sirah
Taylor Mountain Vineyard & Elder Vineyard

Taylor Mountain Vineyard is nestled just below the saddle-shaped peak of Taylor Mountain, as depicted on the front label painting by well-known Sonoma Valley artist Michael Holland ...more. When John Shakleford Taylor settled in Sonoma Valley in 1853, his land holdings were the largest under one name in all of Sonoma County. On his most prized land he planted Zinfandel and Mission grapes. The Watkins Family has farmed Zinfandel on this breathtaking property since 1979, and we have found that the dark fruit and spicy flavors of Petite Sirah blend perfectly with the boysenberry jam and pepper components of Zinfandel. Elder Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley is carefully tended by Vineyard Micromanagement.

These low-yielding Zinfandel and Petite Sirah vines produce a concentrated and complex wine that is a great example of hillside-grown Zinfandel. The wine has humongous fruit yet perfectly balanced acidity and alcohol. It pairs well with spicier, saltier dishes such as paella with peppered chicken and spicy sausage or baby back ribs.

2008 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay
Jenkins Vineyard

the fruit of this wine was grown in our home vineyard, resting at 1,400 feet in the foothills of California's Santa Cruz Mountains above Los Gatos. Planted in 1999, there are appr ...moreoximately 650 vines on this sloping one-acre vineyard site that produced just over four tons of fruit for the 2008 harvest. The grapes were hand harvested early in the morning and transported directly to the winery in small picking lugs. They were then immediately whole cluster pressed and fermented and aged in French oak barrels.

“The 2008 Chardonnay reveals wonderful green apple and pineapple aromas with essence of vanilla and honeysuckle. The palate explodes with fruit. A harvest basket of apple, pear, melon and banana are a wonderful contrast to the mineral flavors that are always evident in the wines from our estate hillside vineyard. These flavors all intertwine with cinnamon and clove spice, adding to the complexity of this wine. The mouth-filling richness and sweet toasty oak set the stage for the crisp lively finish.”--GJ

2007 Livermore Valley Syrah
Madden Ranch

We are very excited about the Syrah grapes from John Madden's Livermore Valley vineyard. Madden Ranch has 20 acres of Concannon clone Syrah--one fo the oldest Syrah clones in Cali ...morefornia--all on 5BB rootstock. Located on the warmer eastern edge of the Livermore Valley, there are threee different vineyard blocks on the ranch, each with a different slope and aspect.

Grapes were harvested on September 21, 2007 and October 4, 2007 and each lot was taken to our winery where a 3 day cold soak was followed by yeast inoculation. The wine was aged in French oak for 15 months before bottling.

“From the deeply purple 2007 Madden Ranch Syrah aromas of blackberries and freshly roasted coffee arise, with tempting hints of caramel and molasses. Once tasted, the wine releases is flavors of ripe black fruit, dark chocolate and roasted meats with cracked black pepper, and a bit of clove and toasty oak. The Madden Ranch Syrah is a rich, mouth-coating wine with an abundance of palate pleasing tannins followed by the balanced acidity in the fruit laden finish.”—GJ

2007 Santa Cruz Mountains Syrah
Black Ridge Vineyard

These grapes come from a carefully tended hillside vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Los Gatos. The wine was barrel aged in French oak for 15 months to provide additional ...morestructure and balance. This is an excellent example of what a coastal climate Syrah should be.

“The 2007 Black Ridge Vineyard Syrah exhibits intriguing aromas of blackberry and wild black cherries with layered notes of spice, chocolate, coffee and caramel. On the palate the wine shows its vibrant core of blackberry and raspberry that expand with well-proportioned flavors of molasses, nutmeg, and a touch of earthiness and French oak. The wine’s firm, ripe tannins and juicy acidity will allow it to evolve and age graciously for many years.”—GJ

2004 Vine HIll Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon
Oakville, Napa Valley

Our single-vineyard Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from several special blocks of grapes grown in the acclaimed Vine Hill Ranch along Oakville’s gently sloping west ...moreern benchlands. We have been purchasing these grapes from Vine Hill Ranch owner Bob Phillips since 1981, and they consistently yield exceptionally intense, concentrated and complex Cabernet Sauvignons that annually rank among Napa Valley’s finest.
We utilize traditional artisan winemaking techniques with the Vine Hill Ranch fruit to ensure the maximum extraction of color, flavor and tannin. After crushing the grapes, the juice is cold-soaked for 48 hours before fermentation is initiated with a cultured yeast strain. In 2004, we used a single French strain that enhances mid-palate texture, depth and intensity. After fermentation completed, and the wine enjoyed an extended maceration on the skins to further extract color and flavor while softening tannins, we gently drained the free run wine from the skins and aged it in French oak barrels for 22 months, 63% new, before bottling in August 2006.

2005 Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley

Our 2005 Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon was produced from three prime vineyard sites located along the gently sloping western benchlands of Napa Valley’s Oakville appellation. ...more These sites enjoy ideal eastern exposures, mild afternoon temperatures and well-drained soils, ensuring their fruit ripens slowly and evenly throughout the growing season. We hand-harvest, ferment and age each block separately to capture its unique qualities, then blend the lots to create a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional fragrance, depth and character.

To craft our Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon, Cakebread Cellars winemaker Julianne Laks ferments the fruit from each vineyard site separately, employing the tank sizes, yeast strains, fermentation temperatures and maceration techniques best suited to each lot, which vary not only by location and ripeness level, but also by clonal type. These specialized fermentations and the lot-specific barrel aging regimens Julianne employs ensure that the finest attributes of each vineyard site are reflected in the final blend. The 2005 Benchland Select aged a total of 21 months in French oak barrels, 38% new, before bottling in July, 200
