Wellington Vineyards

2047 visitors

The estate vineyards consist of 21 acres, 8 of which are 81 to 113 years old. There are 24 different varieties in the old vineyard, with the most common being Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache and Syrah. In addition, there are 10 acres of eleven to sixteen year old vines that consist of Merlot, Chardonnay, Marsanne, and Syrah. We grow more Merlot than anything else. Three more acres were replanted in 2001, predominantly to Syrah, Zinfandel and Grenache.

2003 Cabernet Sauvignon
Mohrhardt Ridge

Mohrhardt Ridge is the most Bordeaux like of our Cabernets, very aromatic, with great complexity and elegant texture. The aromas are definitely those of a cool climate vineyard: ra ... morespberry, black pepper, violets, with hints of olive and spice. The oak (40% new French and American) is very well integrated, with hints of vanilla and caramel. The smooth entry, lively fruit, and hallmark Mohrhardt Ridge silky texture lead to a long, balanced finish with just enough slightly chewy tannin to ensure longevity. While it is easy to drink now, it will only improve with age.

2006 Marsanne
Sonoma Valley Estate

This 2006 Marsanne is fruitier than the 2005, with aromas reminiscent of orange, tangerine and apricot, along with notes of almond and pepper. A moderately rich entry is followed b ... morey a full viscous mid-palate dominated by orange-tangerine flavors. The hint of tannin in the finish promises further evolution and age-worthiness.

Sonoma Valley Estate

The aromas are quite forward , with the Viognier adding significant notes of peach and apricot to the intense raspberry-like fruit of the Syrah. Though dominated by the fresh fruit ... more character, this wine also shows hints of licorice and spice. In the mouth it is more elegant and refined than our EnglandCrest bottling, and promises more enjoyment in the near term.

2005 Roussanne
Russian River

Flavors of citrus, almond and a mineral note are buoyed by ample acidity. The finish is long and clean with lingering fruit flavors. The alcohol level is somewhat lower than the pr ... moreevious two vintages, making this wine match well with a broad variety of cuisine, including spicy dishes.

Handal-Denier Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley

The aroma has good intensity, dominated by ripe fruit (cherry, blueberry and cassis) with notes of spice and vanilla. On the palate this Cabernet achieves the elusive combination o ... moref power and finesse, the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. A moderately sweet, supple entry and rich, but not heavy, middle lead to a long finish with soft tannins and lingering fruit aftertaste. We expect that this wine will continue to fill out, soften and gain finesse for several years to come.

Karren Vineyard, Sonoma Mountain

The Cabernet from this vineyard produces a sturdy full-bodied wine with plenty of rich tannins, making it both age worthy and enjoyable in its youth. The aroma has good intensity, ... moredominated by black fruit (blueberry and black cherry in particular) with notes of spice and vanilla. On the palate this Cabernet achieves the elusive combination of power and finesse, the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. 2006 Chardonnay
Sonoma Valley

We absolutely love this new vintage of Chardonnay. All grapes were harvested early in the morning, whole cluster pressed while still cold, then fermented in 60 gallon French oak ba ... morerrels. Following primary fermentation, the wine completed malolactic, or secondary fermentation, and was aged sur-lie for seven months with regular batonage.

2003 Syrah, Cuvee "R"

Five different Syrah clones plus 4% Vognier give great complexity. This wine is so black it’s almost opaque. The nose has tons of cherry and wild berry fruit with notes of stone ... morefruit, cassis and smoked bacon. The structure is classic: muscular and racy. This is not a typical fat, sweet, high alcohol California style wine, but don’t get the wrong idea – it’s not thin or tart either. This cuvee is significantly more age worthy than any Syrah we’ve made to date (the 1994 and 1995 are wonderful right now). I’d suggest pairing it with hearty fare if you drink it young. I’m going to cellar quite a few bottles and drink the EnglandCrest while I’m letting this develop.

White Port
Sonoma Valley

Most of the fruit is from our 70 to 100 year old estate blocks. The current bottling is a blend that dates back over the past twelve years and is offering more of the sherry qualit ... moreies. The white port is lower in alcohol, acid and residual sweetness than the red port. As a result, it is softer and smoother, and a pleasant counterpoint to spice cookies, gingerbread and other lighter desserts.145 cases produced.

2004 Syrah
England Crest, Sonoma Valley

The grapes for this wine were harvested in four separate lots, between Sept. 26th and Oct. 22nd, a span of almost four weeks. Each vineyard block was picked at optimal maturity and ... more all were fermented in small open top tanks with manual punchdown. The finished wine has intense blackberry and cassis aromas, along with caramel and violets, and the smoky-gamy-bacony signature so unique to Syrah. It is full and rich without being overbearing and has enough chewy tannin to age gracefully for a few years if you can resist drinking it now.

2004 Estate Zinfandel 100 Year Old Vines

100 year old vines! Well, actually 112 years old; the block of vines that produced the fruit for this wine was planted in 1892. This could be the last Zinfandel we bottle with this ... more designation. From both 2005 and 2006 we have blended the Zin from the ancient vines with that from more recent plantings that were grafted using wood from our old vines.

2004 Zinfandel
Meeks Hilltop Ranch, Sonoma Valley

We are so pleased with the intensity and the classic Zinfandel character from this young vineyard that we decided to produce a vineyard designated wine starting with the 2003 vinta ... morege. We carefully selected 8 out of 22 barrels for this blend, representing three of the four vineyard blocks. This wine epitomizes our stylistic goal of a combination of intensity and seamless balance. Concentrated blackberry and raspberry fruit aromas with hints of black pepper lead into a rich, dense, but never clumsy, mouthful of good ol’ Zin.

2006 Noir de Noirs, Old Vines
Sonoma Valley

This wine is made from a blend of four teinturiers (grape varieties with colored juice) from our estate vineyard and the neighboring Pagani Ranch. It is predominantly Alicante Bous ... morechet blended with Lenoir, Grand Noir and Petite Bouschet. Although 2006 was a high yield vintage for most vineyards, the Pagani Ranch Alicante crop was very light – less than half the production of 2003 or 2004. As a result, this wine is bigger and richer than the previous two vintages, just bursting with fresh grape aroma and flavor. Ripe berry fruit aromas, chocolate, lots of spice. Thick, viscous and full of jammy, sweet tasting fruit. Still the wine you drink with a fork! Regular Gold medal winner at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair.

2003 Zinfandel
Sonoma Valley

Two small Glen Ellen vineyards that were planted with our input provided the lion’s share of the grapes in this blend, Shumahi Ranch and Meeks Hilltop Ranch. We did bottle a smal ... morel amount of Hilltop as a vineyard designate for the first time in 2003, and would like to do so with Shumahi in the future. Although we prefer to bottle wines that express individual site character, our primary goal is to make the best wine possible, and in 2003 the two wines complemented each other nicely. This is a classic Zinfandel, with briar, blackberry, raspberry and black pepper. There are added notes of brown spices and caramel. It is very fruity, dry, has moderate alcohol (for Zin), and isn’t buried under tons of new oak and residual sugar as is way too common these days.
