Roussanne

215 visitors
Roussanne is a relatively rare variety of grape grown originally in the Rhône River Valley in France, and used in some white wines there and in the Tuscany region of Italy. The grape is also planted in various wine-growing regions of the New World, such as California, Washington, and Australia. The berries are distinguished by their russet color when ripe — roux is French for the reddish brown color russet, and is probably the root for the variety's name.

It is a difficult variety to grow, with vulnerability to mildew, poor resistance to drought and wind, late and/or uneven ripening, and irregular yields.

2004 Venus Roussanne

Two vineyards have been utilized to make this 100% Roussanne. A small portion of the blend is grown adjacent to the Viognier used in our Aphrodite bottling, the balance is grown in ...more the cobblestone laden soil of Bennett Valley. This is a step up in concentration and intensity over our 2003 bottling, with all of the trademark flavors and aromas that make Roussanne one of our favorite whites to drink. This wine shows a roasted element, which it picks up from the scorching heat that hit California late in the ripening cycle of these vines, a character that is more reminiscent of the Roussanne based whites from Chateauneuf-du-pape than those from the north.

2004 Roussanne

Very ripe and slightly pungent now showing a fascinating combination of honeyed, heavy tropical fruit like over-ripe papaya and strong herbal/vegetal notes. Very rich, made in an o ...moreld-fashioned oxidative style, which will reward long aging. Low acidity which makes it appear richer and more concentrated than some of the previous vintages. The merest hint of vanilla – taste of rhubarb and tropical fruit, with nicely rounded oak and a herbal spicey side.

2005 Roussanne Reserve
Amarosa Vineyard, Lodi

We love this exotic white wine that forms the basis for most Northern Rhone wines of France. Why? The structure. In the nose our Amorosa Roussanne is inscrutable. Is that Honeysuck ...morele? Orange rind? But wait until it gets in your mouth. The structure is incredible. The bold early impressions, the big, creamy mid-palate, the juicy finish combine for a wild ride. Unusually, Roussanne's structure makes for an ageable white wine, We've tasted examples that are over 15 years old and they develop a deep honey character, a remarkable golden hue and a giant mid-palate weight. Try keeping a few bottles in your cellar for a decade or so. Serve at cellar temperature.
