Pinot Noir

22544 visitors
Pinot noir is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name may also refer to wines produced predominantly from pinot noir grapes. The name is derived from the french words for pine and black alluding to the varietals tightly clustered dark purple pine cone shaped bunches of fruit.

Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. In De re rustica, Columella described a grape variety in Burgundy in the 1st century A.D. that sounds like Pinot noir. It is widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, but is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine.

2004 Red Dog Vineyard Sonoma Mountain Pinot Noir

This is a high elevation, cold & foggy vineyard on the northwest flank of Sonoma Mountain. 2004 is the first vintage from the vineyard which exhibits deep, dark flavors of blackber ...morery, blueberry, anise and mineral. It's BIG wine that pairs nicely with venison, mole sauce and other deep, rich and spicy foods. yum! We made just 208 cases of this wine.

2002 Pinot Noir
Cohn Vineyard

The 2002 Cohn Vineyard Pinot Noir reflects the evolution in the reductive, fruit forward style that is sweeping California Pinot producers. It is lush and round toward the front wi ...moreth a more distinct berry component. Pinot goes with a wider variety of food than any other wine. We often pair it with grilled salmon and seared tuna. We have two other Pinots, the Jemrose Vineyard, Bennett Valley, which is even more fruit centric than is the '02 Cohn and an Ashton Vineyard, Sonoma Valley, that is floral and spicy.

2006 Sanford and Benedict Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
Santa Ynez Valley

Planted in 1971 by Richard Sanford, this is the oldest Pinot Noir vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley. It was purchased in 1990 by Janice and Robert Atkin, and today they farm it wit ...moreh the same high standards. The finished wine is a blend of the original Mt. Eden planting and some newer Dijon clones, adding to the wine’s complexity. Tobacco, spice, and light smokiness on the nose draw you in, which then opens up to more fruit-driven aromas of red fruit and cherry cola. On the palate the fruit builds even further with cherry, blackberry, and black cherry, still paired off with cola, tobacco, and toastiness, and over time a slight floral character develops on both the palate and the nose. The fruit from this vineyard expresses itself with a wonderful balance of nuanced flavors, bold fruit character, and great structure, with supple tannins and good acidity to carry the palate through a smooth finish.

2005 Widdoes Russian River Pinot Noir
Russian River Valley

The Widdoes Vineyard is owned by Shirley & Don Widdoes, whose family has owned the property for many years. It is located in the cool micro-climate zone of Green Valley in the Russ ...moreian River Valley, and is leased and farmed by the Duttons, who planted the vines nearly twenty years ago. These relatively old vines tend to ripen fruit slowly, producing wines with tremendous depth and complexity. Tobacco and chocolate aromas join spiced notes on the nose, rounding out to include raspberry cordials and earthiness. The palate reflects these elements as well and bursts with raspberry and red plum, drawing out in a long finish of fruit, spice, and chocolate shavings. Well-balanced tannins and acidity give the wine good grip and will allow it to age well over the next several years.

2006 Ketcham Estate Ketcham Vineyard Pinot Noir
Ketcham Vineyard, Russian River Valley

This is the first wine we have produced with
grapes exclusively from our vineyard (to say
we are excited is a gross understatement!). The
nose is more intense ...morethan the RRV, and more
complex. There is a hint of dark chocolate
wrapped around the signature spice and dark
red fruits. This wine has more explosive flavors
and the chocolate nuances appear on the palate
as well. But this wine screams Russian River
Valley and confirms the profile that we believe
is a hallmark of the vineyard - that is, red
raspberries, cherries and an underlying stream
of spices. The wine has softer tannins and,
although it is approachable now, it will greatly
benefit from a year or two in the cellar. Only 92
cases produced.

The #777 clone added color and body to the finished wine, which features cranberry, loganberry, spice and forest floor aromatics. We fermented each of our six Anderson Valley Pinot Noir clones separately to optimize their distinctive personalities, with 15% fermenting with native yeasts from the vineyard. Pr ...moreior to fermentation, each lot received a three-day cold soak to gently extract color and tannin while accentuating Pinot Noir’s fruit-forward character. In traditional Burgundian fashion, the juice fermented in open-top tanks with gentle, manual punch-down of the cap. After fermentation completed, the wines macerated on the skins for another two weeks, with daily assessments of color and tannin development. We then gently drain the free run wine from the skins and age it in French oak barrels. The 2006 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir aged 15 months in French oak, 45% new, before being bottled in December, 2007

2005 Pinot Noir, Cargasacchi Vineyard
Santa Rita Hills

This small 16-acre vineyard has become one of the stars of the Santa Rita Hills appellation. Planted in 1998, the property features Clone 115 Pinot Noir planted on 3309 rootstock. ...moreThe vineyard is located at the extreme west end of Santa Rita Hills, where its proximity to the Pacific Ocean makes it one of the coolest vineyards in California. The soil type is the Botella Series, a composition of both clay and loam that has a fairly high calcareous content, which drains well and helps moderate yields.

Pinot Noir clusters from the Cargasacchi Vineyard were hand sorted before being de-stemmed and immediately chilled for a pre-fermentation cold soak where the most beneficial extraction of color, aroma and flavor occurs. During fermentation, concentration was enhanced by gently punching down the cap. As soon as the wine reached dryness, it was pressed and transferred to 60-gallon French oak barrels where it aged for 17 months. About 45% of the barrels were new French oak.

This Pinot Noir is deeply concentrated, seamless and complex—the combined result of pure vineyard expression, cellar complexity and oak barrel infusion. Rich aromas of wild blackberry and ripe plum a
