Pinot Noir

22545 visitors
Pinot noir is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name may also refer to wines produced predominantly from pinot noir grapes. The name is derived from the french words for pine and black alluding to the varietals tightly clustered dark purple pine cone shaped bunches of fruit.

Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. In De re rustica, Columella described a grape variety in Burgundy in the 1st century A.D. that sounds like Pinot noir. It is widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, but is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine.

2000 Pinot Noir, Mills Vineyard
Mt. Harlan

The great Robert Parker tasted this wine in April, 2003, and described it Nov. 10, 2003 on eRobertParker.com as follows: "Low yields of 1.1 ton of fruit per acre (16.5 hectoliters ...moreof wine per hectare of vineyard) result-ed in a medium ruby-colored Pinot offering a big, sweet nose of straw-berries, cherries, spice box, and cloves. Medium to full-bodied, with moderate tannin, this pure, earthy, concentrated effort needs another 1-2 years of cellaring. It should drink well for 10-15 years. 90+ points." WineSkinny.com on Nov. 22, 2004, described it thusly: "Mocha-scented blueberry and ripe cherry flavors, pick up allspice and a dash of funky earth. Dusty tannins are offset by a nice, bright acidity and lengthy fin-ish. Ready to drink now and over the next five or six years."

Arroyo Grande

This wine is exceptional on a number of levels. A study not only in cool climate Pinot Noir, but in the potential of this site. Its cool climate rearing is seen in the concentratio ...moren of dark fruit - black cherry, blackberry and plum evident in the nose and on the palate. With these flavors at its heart, the wine shows layers of spicy mocha, rose petal and a rich supple texture. The characteristics of the clones come forward in its earthy richness and its silky texture. It is at once intense and seductive, offering a firm structure along with a lingering finish that begs for exploration. Deep dark and rich, it is great now or will cellar for some years to come.
