Merlot is a red wine grape that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and fleshiness, combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot an ideal grape to blend with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the most popular red wine varietals in the United States and Chile.

The 2005 J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot has a dark red color with purple hues and good density. The aroma is dominated by fresh blueberry and boysenberry fruit and layered with li ...morefted spicy oak. The palate is greeted by an array of red fruits similar to those on the nose, with some cherry fruit thrown in for good measure. The wine has a full mid-palate and a firm finish that carries the wine through with a lingering hint of fruits and licorice spice. 2004 Merlot

The Carmody McKnight and El Pomar Junction Vineyards are two wonderful sites for Paso Robles Merlot. Despite hot, windy conditions during June of 2003, little berry shatter occurre ...mored and we were blessed with a large set of small-berried Merlot clusters which produced a deeply pigmented and flavorful wine.



Fruit was hand-harvested, inoculated with cultured yeast, fermented in separate lots, then pressed together prior to barreling down. We employed 50% new Trust Hungarian oak, and 50% two to three year-old Demptos and Seguin Moreau thin stave Chateau-style barrels to age the wine 18 months. Prior to bottling, we added 13% Cabernet Franc to lift the aromatics and firm the structure of the wine. This dark Merlot has aromas of anise seed, ripe berry, olive and cigar box spices. On the palate, the wine is tightly structured with moderately firm, persistent tannins. Enjoy with grilled or lightly smoked foods, barbecued meats and braised root vegetables.

2003 was an excellent vintage in Sonoma County. Cool weather in early spring was followed by good heat in the summer and ideal warm temperatures in September. This balance of weath ...moreer conditions allowed the grapes to experience a “long hang time†to develop rich flavors and ripe, supple tannins. With this vintage our winemaking focus continues its shift to smaller production lots using this concentrated fruit. The resulting wine demonstrates flavors of ripe plum, black cherry, cassis and spice. While the composition may vary slightly from vintage to vintage, this Bordeaux style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec consistently delivers the rich, full-bodied Merlot you have come to expect from Lambert Bridge Winery.

The complexity of this wine allows it to be partnered with a wide range of foods. Pair with mushroom ravioli, eggplant parmesan or chocolate fondue with strawberries.

Vibrant aromas of fresh raspberry, black cherry, sweet toasty oak and spice characterize this vintage of Merlot. The flavors are full and round, fulfilling the promise of the brigh ...moret aromatics. A rich supple texture and silky polished tannins give the wine a long, lingering finish.

With 16 months in French Oak barrels and a full year in the bottle, this vintage is complex and delicious, showing nuances of cocoa and warm brown spice.

Very enjoyable now, this wine will continue to improve for at least 5-7 years when cellared properly.

We recommend serving with Grilled Pork Tenderloin, Pan Seared Duck Breasts with Lentils or fresh baked Chocolate Chip Cookies.

DaKine Vineyard, is nestled at the bottom of an east-facing hill on Westside Road in Healdsburg. The vineyard's original owner obtained budwood from the “3 Palms†Merlot vineya ...morerd in Napa Valley and planted 3 acres on AXR1 rootstock in 1988. In addition, ¾ acre of Malbec was established. In 1995 three more acres of Chardonnay (on 5C rootstock) were budded over to Merlot (unknown clone). In 2005, Oded bought the property from Mondavi/Arrowood and began farming the grapes. This is the first vintage Longboard made from these grapes.



“DaKine†(pronounced Dah-kine) comes from the Pidgin Hawaiian language and is often used to describe a great event. Unlike most Merlots destined to be blended into other wines, we decided this vineyard makes a wine that is superb by itself. The 2005 DaKine Merlot is lush with vanilla and blueberry aromas that lead to a generous mid-palate of full and sweet tannins, soy and dark chocolate flavors. The finish is long and slightly spicy, we believe it will age well in the next 7 years.

Soft and smooth is the best way to describe this young but very delightful Merlot. The grapes came from a premium vineyard in Mendocino where the climate is perfect for producing ultra-premium Merlot.
