Merlot is a red wine grape that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and fleshiness, combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot an ideal grape to blend with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the most popular red wine varietals in the United States and Chile.

The 2004 growing season produced a small crop of merlot which was crushed and fermeneted with Pasteur red yeast for three weeks before pressing off, then racked to French oak barre ...morels where it aged for nineteen months. The addition of cabernet franc adds structure and a bit of spiciness to the final product. Aromas of sweet cherry, anise, and clove give way to flavors of forest floor, cedar, clove, black raspberry and oak. A firm backbone of tannin supports the wine without getting in the way of the flavor and ensures the wine will age for years to come. But don't wait years to try it!

Serve 2004 Merlot with duck breasts braised in a merlot, dried apricot and dried cherry sauce.

Having an estate vineyard gives us complete control over every detail ...moregrowing the grapes to enhance and improve the quality of our wines. The 2003 vintage is very accessible and ready to drink with a wide range of dishes. This vintage of Merlot has a refreshing leanness to it, with a bright, tapered finish. Itâ€™s a focused wine, with smoky bark notes from a mix of mostly French and a bit of American oak. The flavors and aromas are forward, perfumed plush red fruit, and ripe without being overpowering â€“ a wine that goes with food. There is also a touch of cedar from the oak barrels. The combination of structure, depth and richness makes this 2003 Merlot drinkable now but it could easily age if you can wait. Please enjoy our 2003 Merlot with family and friends.

After the grapes arrive at the winery, we de-stem and crush them, then cold-soak the must (unfermented juice and skins) for 24-36 hours to extract color and flavor prior to ferment ...moreation. Once fermentation commences, we used a Bordeaux technique called rack-and-return, in which fermenting juice is drained from one tank and transferred to another, leaving the â€˜capâ€™ of grape skins in the first tank to fall to the bottom. We then return the fermenting wine to the original tank, re-macerating the skins and maximizing color and flavor extraction while softening tannins through controlled aeration. Once fermentation completes, we age the wine in French oak barrels â€“ a total of 18 months in 2006 â€“ which further softens this delicious, fruit-driven wine
