Our goal is to make wines of rich concentration that offer aromatic complexity, varietal transparency, and vivid separation between the layers of subtle flavors. We want our wines to excite the palate and the mind. Great wines are first and foremost a result of superb raw material. This means carefully chosen sites, cutting edge viticulture, and, of course, low yields. Using both old world and modern techniques, we allow that material to show its unique character by doing as little as possible to manipulate it. We are lovers of wine, not wood. We'll utilize French oak as a spice, to enhance but not overwhelm the wine. In order to avoid stripping away flavor and aroma, we do not intend to fine or filter.

2000 Syrah, The Window

Red Car's debut release is called The Window. It is 100% Syrah blended from selected parcels of the San Marcos Vineyard in Paso Robles and the Colson Canyon Vineyard in Santa Maria ... more. The San Marcos fruit was picked at 25.5 brix. It was practically bursting with wild blueberry, white pepper and hickory smoke. The Colson fruit came in at a lower 24 brix, but zesty and firm and with the snap of a fresh Gravenstein apple. The Window has loads of rich fruit, smoke and spice with a racy, bracing acidity. It is drinkable upon release but should evolve stylishly for 5 to 7 years. It spent a year in barrels made for the Grand Vin at Chateau Margaux.

2006 Syrah, Speakeasy

Speakeasy is our “coolest” wine so far — in its climate, fruit, and style. It is dominated by cooler climate flavors because over 70% of its grapes hail from true cool climat ... moree regions. This evolving style is the result of trying to produce more sophisticated and graceful syrah. The lush tastes of wild Maine blueberries, Ranier cherries, licorice and Kona coffee are balanced and refined. The percentage of new oak has been lowered, too, allowing the mouthfeel to be linear yet silky. Scents of crushed peppercorn, fresh grass, and clove come off the nose with a hint of orange rind. Elegance has spoken.

2006 Pinot Noir, Amour Fou

As we source cooler climate sites for pinot noir, the style of Amour Fou is evolving. In fact, the 2006 Amour Fou is now a Sonoma Coast appellation wine. The vineyard blend is La B ... moreoheme (60%), Zio Tony (24%), and Bartolomei (16%). These growing areas give bright concentrated flavors with lower alcohols and higher natural acids while remaining rich and flavorful. The Amour Fou label story, however, remains the same. It is a voyeuristic look into a naughty '40s romance. The pangs and punishment of desire unfold with each vintage.

2003 Pinot Noir, Amour Fou

The 2003 Amour Fou represents a style very similar to the 02. The blend is comprised of 70% Keefer Ranch and 30% George Martinelli. The color is a deep magenta, with flashes of red ... more and rose at the rim. The nose has that end of summer butter crust cherry and plum pie character that made the 02 so popular and so controversial. The mouth-feel is very rich, eschewing subtlety for pure pleasure. We recommend drinking this over the near term with something substantial – wild game, grilled duck breast or a thick pork chop with a fig, cherry or cranberry glaze. Or drink it all by itself when you need a shot of unbridled, guilty hedonism.

2003 Some Like It Red

The 2003 Some Like It Red is comprised of four neutral barrels of Syrah from seven year old vines in block two of the Thompson Vineyard near Santa Barbara and one barrel of Pinot i ... moren a new Francois Freres barrel from Keefer Ranch in the Green Valley.

The wine has a deep crimson color with rose at the rim. The initial aromatics suggest bilberry, raspberry, then cranberry and a savory, meaty Syrah note that makes your mouth water. The palate impression is deep, sweet and long. We recommend an hour’s worth of decanting. Try it at your table with grilled meats.

"SD" is inky blue/black in color, much darker than the two previous releases. The nose, while still reticent, offers up blueberry, black cherry, blackberry, smoked meat, and melted tar. 50% new, Seguin Moreau barrels lend a sweet oak component that helps knit everything together. SD has more weight and presence on the palate than its predecessors. The finish seems to last for minutes. In short, it’s killer juice.

2002 Syrah, The Fight

The 2002 The Fight is 100% Syrah from the Richard Perry Vineyard, which is in the Coombsville area of Napa County. Planted in 1989, it is one of the older Syrah vineyards in Califo ... morernia. The Fight has always been exotic, perhaps due to its location in a warmer climate. The nose has elements of melted licorice, rare steak, plums, and blackberries (the kind you find growing at the edge of a country road at the very peak of ripeness). The palate is chock full of black fruit, plum and hint of licorice. It was raised in 100% new French oak for 18 months, bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.

The wine spent a total of 16 months in 60% new French oak. There’s nothing shy about Amour Fou. It is big, bold and rich. The color is a deep plum red, with a bit of rose at the edges. The nose is very “red” – frais de bois, ripe plums, cherries, vanilla and butter crust. The flavors, as we said, are quite rich. A dash of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%) from the Shadow Canyon Vineyard near Templeton finishes this intriguing blend.

Instead of the center to rim midnight hour black of our 100% Syrahs, Some Like It Red has a lighter, pre-dawn meniscus. The nose starts with black Syrah fruit (maybe a whiff of black currant from the Cab) and a hint of meat, but then strawberry, rhubarb, rose petal and a bit of vanilla make for a very complex bouquet. The Syrah provides weight and texture. The Pinot leavens everything nicely. The flavors echo the aromatics. The finish is long.

2001 The Stranger

The Stranger is 100% Syrah blended from two vineyards – 59% San Marcos (Paso Robles) and 41% Colson Canyon (Santa Maria). San Marcos produced an elegant, aromatic wine with smoke ... mored meat and boysenberry notes. Colson was a savage, blue-black monster, redolent of blueberries and blackberries. Both wines were gently de-stemmed then crushed by hand. Each wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts, and given long macerations on the skins - 30 days for San Marcos, 60 for Colson.

The color is dark purple. The nose (at bottling) suggests a “summer pudding” of boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry with a hint of black olive, grilled meat (steak) and a touch of vanilla from the 25% new Seguin Moreau “Haut Brion” barrels. The flavors are deep and layered with a creamy, almost decadent mouthfeel.

The color is a deep crimson. The aromatics open slowly, revealing Cuban tobacco leaf, red currant, crème de cassis, plum compote, and subtle oak. The mouth-feel is soft and velvety. The flavors are very rich with plum, more crème de cassis and vanilla. The finish on this lasts 40 seconds to a minute.
