Syrah

26088 visitors
Wines made from Shiraz are often quite powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called typical though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these primary notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory tertiary notes such as leather and truffle. Secondary flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, including winemakers’ practices, and terroir.

Food Pairing: Pairs well with grilled and barbecued meats, pork and venison, or fish and poultry that are very light on sauces. Nice with a hunk of rustic bread and olive oil.

2004 Syrah
Amber Ridge Vineyard

Our 2004 Amber Ridge Vineyard Syrah is our inaugural vintage of this variety. We decided to make this wine in the same style as we make our Pinot Noirs. By doing this we hope to ca ...morepture the true essence of Russian River Syrah. The grapes were cold soaked, then fermented at moderate temperatures. 35% of the fermentation lots consisted of whole clusters, contributing to the mouth-feel and complexity. We have held this wine for one year in the bottle to give the wine time to relax and integrate before releasing it to you.

2000 Syrah
Kurtzer Vineyard, Livermore

Our Kurtzer Syrah was harvested late in the 2000 season and had a huge tannic mouth feel when it was young. How do we tame this delightful wine without robbing the fruit? Due to ou ...morer unique circumstances, we were able to age this for over four years in new French oak barrels. Compared to bottle aging, barrel aging gives a much more rapid rounding and softening of the tannins. As a four year old, our Kurtzer retains its regal nose which is well supported by mature French Oak. The oak influence actually peaked in year three and is now calmed down to playing a supporting role to the rightful star - jammy berry fruit. One of the things we like best about making single varietal, single vineyard releases is that after a time we recognize specific characteristics of each vineyard. The smoky bacon element, typical of this vineyard from our earlier vintages is evident, but as a reserved element. We think this wine is remarkable, four years in barrel has given a wine of beautiful round character that typically only comes from a big wine that has aged for 15-20 years in the bottle. Unfiltered and unfined, the Kurtzer may still throw sediment.

2003 Alexander Valley Syrah

The allure of Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley has captured our winemaking interest and enticed us to purchase from an exquisite boutique Syrah vineyard in the town of Asti. The ...moregently rolling hills and the warm, long days in the northern Alexander Valley allow the three different clones of Syrah planted on this ranch to mature to optimum ripeness. The result is an inky-dark, voluptuous wine of uncommon depth and character. This wine matured in a blend of French and American oak for eighteen months and was released in March 2005. Flavors of ripe plum, dusty briar berries, and a truffle-like note make this intriguing Syrah a wine to look forward to.

2004 Syrah
Napa Valley

The Syrah vines were planted in 1997, 1300 ft. above the Napa Valley floor on Howell Mountain. A combination of certified Barossa (Australian Shiraz) and Hermitage (Rhône Valley) ...moreclones were selected and planted on the northern most section of the VIADER property. The terrain was so steep and rocky that we needed the help of dynamite and jackhammers to breakup and fracture the rocky hillside. The 2004 Viader Syrah shows the spice and red fruits of the Australian clone and the aromatic nuances of the Rhône Valley clone. Our hillside brings them together in an elegant and powerful dance.

2003 Syrah
Rutherford, Napa Valley

The 2003 vintage began relatively late, which was a bit unexpected after an early bud break. A cool and rainy May slowed the vine growth, though. This was followed by a cooler than ...more average summer, which made for slow even ripening of the grapes. The fully ripened Syrah fruit was harvested over 8 days mid-October 2003 at an average of 26 Brix. The wine was fermented primarily in stainless steel open top tanks with 2 to 3 punch downs per day for an average of 14 days. After pressing the wine was racked to barrel where it underwent malolactic fermentation and aging for 18 months. Our 2003 Napa Valley Syrah is reflective of meticulous vineyard care, a cool, slow vintage, and careful handling in the cellar. The wine displays a deep red color and exhibits aromas of blackberries, cherries and licorice. The fruit notes are further lifted by the inclusion of 2% Viognier. On the palate, this wine offers concentrated flavors of wild berry and sweet oak. Rich fruit and soft tannins give this Syrah a lingering, supple finish. The wine can be enjoyed immediately or will gain further complexity over the next 4 – 5 years with proper cellaring.

2000 Shiraz
Napa Valley

The 2000 vintage began early with budbreak occurring in the third week of March. Rapid vine growth gave an indication of an early harvest, with the vines flowering by the third wee ...morek of May in favorable conditions. Severe heat in mid June caused some newly set berries to desiccate, thus reducing the crop. Ideal weather from the end of June through September ensured full flavor and tannin development. Our 2000 Shiraz shows what the perfect balance of intense sunlight, warm days and cool nights contributes to the intensity of this noble grape. The wine displays a blackish red color with lifted aromas of blackberries, plums and licorice. On the palate the flavors of wild cherries and sweet vanilla are wrapped in supple tannins for a mouth filling wine. While these soft tannins allow for immediate enjoyment, proper cellaring will reward with increasing complexity over the next 4 to 10 years.
