Intense. Intriguing. A world apart. Voss Vineyards chooses a different path from the vineyard to the cellar. Our vines grow in areas famous for their soils, areas like the Rutherford Bench and Carneros. But we don’t use the classic Napa Valley varietals. Instead we nurture grapes like Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. And we use new winemaking ideas. All to create a new world of wines.

2006 Sauvignon Blanc
Rutherford

The ripening from spring through early summer 2006 was slow and steady. Warm weather during the first 2 weeks of August indicated that we were in for an early harvest, but the cool ... moreer weather during the second half of August slowed down maturation and was ideal for the Sauvignon Blanc. We harvested for maturation over only three nights with the various vineyard blocks giving us the breadth of fruit profile. Our traditional night harvesting during the cool of the early morning helps to retain the vibrant Sauvignon Blanc aromas and flavors. Coupling this with “skin contacting” the fruit for up to 24 hours before pressing amplified the intense fruit flavors from our Rutherford vineyard. The juice was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks over four to five weeks with selected yeasts that further enhanced the flavors. After racking and blending, the wine was bottled at Napa Wine Company (custom crush facility) in March 2007 using Stelvin screw cap closures.

2003 Syrah
Rutherford, Napa Valley

The 2003 vintage began relatively late, which was a bit unexpected after an early bud break. A cool and rainy May slowed the vine growth, though. This was followed by a cooler than ... more average summer, which made for slow even ripening of the grapes. The fully ripened Syrah fruit was harvested over 8 days mid-October 2003 at an average of 26 Brix. The wine was fermented primarily in stainless steel open top tanks with 2 to 3 punch downs per day for an average of 14 days. After pressing the wine was racked to barrel where it underwent malolactic fermentation and aging for 18 months. Our 2003 Napa Valley Syrah is reflective of meticulous vineyard care, a cool, slow vintage, and careful handling in the cellar. The wine displays a deep red color and exhibits aromas of blackberries, cherries and licorice. The fruit notes are further lifted by the inclusion of 2% Viognier. On the palate, this wine offers concentrated flavors of wild berry and sweet oak. Rich fruit and soft tannins give this Syrah a lingering, supple finish. The wine can be enjoyed immediately or will gain further complexity over the next 4 – 5 years with proper cellaring.

2005 Viognier
Carneros

The fruit for our Viognier is from the Cold Creek Vineyard in Carneros. The extremely well drained sandy loam soil is quite a departure from the normal Carneros clay. Temperatures ... moreduring the growing season are rather cool, with high temperatures generally in the high 70’s to low 80’s. This leads to a long growing season and a late harvest date, giving the vines time to develop concentrated flavor in the grapes. The 2005 Viognier exhibits intensely perfumed aromas of nectarine, apricot, jasmine and honeysuckle. On the palate, this rich wine offers exotic flavors of papaya and orange peel with a luscious lingering finish. While this wine offers immediate enjoyment, it will develop well in the bottle for the next 3 to 5 years.

2000 Merlot
Napa Valley

The 2000 vintage began early with budbreak occurring in the third week of March. Rapid vine growth gave an indication of an early harvest. The Merlot vines began flowering by the s ... moreecond week of May under beautiful skies. A severe heat wave in mid June caused some of the newly set berries to desiccate, thus reducing the crop. Warm days and cool nights were the norm from July through September, allowing for flavor and tannin development, while retaining the natural grape acids. The Merlot was harvested at an average of 23.5 Brix. Our 2000 Napa Valley Merlot is our best effort to date. This wine displays a deep red color and aromas of black cherry, plums, and cassis. Beneath the primary fruit characters are oak-influenced notes of cedar and mocha. On the palate this wine has rich fruit and ripe but firm tannins. While enjoyable now, our 2000 Merlot will develop additional layers of earth and tobacco with additional bottle age.

2000 Shiraz
Napa Valley

The 2000 vintage began early with budbreak occurring in the third week of March. Rapid vine growth gave an indication of an early harvest, with the vines flowering by the third wee ... morek of May in favorable conditions. Severe heat in mid June caused some newly set berries to desiccate, thus reducing the crop. Ideal weather from the end of June through September ensured full flavor and tannin development. Our 2000 Shiraz shows what the perfect balance of intense sunlight, warm days and cool nights contributes to the intensity of this noble grape. The wine displays a blackish red color with lifted aromas of blackberries, plums and licorice. On the palate the flavors of wild cherries and sweet vanilla are wrapped in supple tannins for a mouth filling wine. While these soft tannins allow for immediate enjoyment, proper cellaring will reward with increasing complexity over the next 4 to 10 years.

2000 Botrytis Sauvignon Blanc /Semillon
Napa Valley

The 2000 vintage began early with budbreak occuring in the third week of March. A severe heat wave in mid June caused some of the newly set berries to dessicate, thus reducing the ... morecrop. Ideal weather continued for the Sauvignon Blanc from the end of June until harvest, with warm days and cool nights. A rain storm in early October and regular morning fog gave perfect conditions for Botrytis to infect the thin-skinned grapes. The 2000 Botrytis Sauvignon Blanc /Semillon is golden yellow and shows intense classic botrytis characteristics of apricot and honey along with Sauvignon Blanc notes of passion fruit and orange zest. On the palate this seductive dessert wine explodes with sweet citrus and tropical flavors.

Our 2006 Oui is a departure from our usual blend of Rhône reds. This year it is a dry rosé made from fully ripe 100% Grenache grapes. It's a delicate salmon-pink in color, with vibrant strawberry and plum flavors, set off by a bit of spice (is it ginger?) in the nose. Sufficiently complex and eleg ...
