Voss Vineyards Merlot |
2000 Merlot Napa Valley
The 2000 vintage began early with budbreak occurring in the third week of March. Rapid vine growth gave an indication of an early harvest. The Merlot vines began flowering by the second week of May under beautiful skies. A severe heat wave in mid June caused some of the newly set berries to desiccate, thus reducing the crop. Warm days and cool nights were the norm from July through September, allowing for flavor and tannin development, while retaining the natural grape acids. The Merlot was harvested at an average of 23.5 Brix. Our 2000 Napa Valley Merlot is our best effort to date. This wine displays a deep red color and aromas of black cherry, plums, and cassis. Beneath the primary fruit characters are oak-influenced notes of cedar and mocha. On the palate this wine has rich fruit and ripe but firm tannins. While enjoyable now, our 2000 Merlot will develop additional layers of earth and tobacco with additional bottle age. |
