Merlot is a red wine grape that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and fleshiness, combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot an ideal grape to blend with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the most popular red wine varietals in the United States and Chile.

Due to unfavorable spring weather inhibiting pollination, the Merlot crop in 2003 was very small. The fruit that did finally make it produced wines with rich, concentrated structur ...moree and dark fruit flavors. The core of the 2003 Reserve Merlot blend consists of lots from several vineyards in the Carneros region of Napa Valley. The O’Brien family vineyard in the Oak Knoll District south of Yountville has produced consistently high quality since our first production from there in 2000. Both regions are in the cooler, fog-influenced southern end of the valley. We included a small lot of Petit Verdot from La Herradura on Conn Valley Road to add some depth and richness to the wine’s structure.

Deep and dark ruby/plum in color, the 2005 Merlot is big, dark and intense wit ...moreh mouth filling fruit of blackberry, black cherry and cassis. Aromatics of sweet cherry liqueur, caramel, toffee, coffee, and forest floor that lead to a profile of cedar, earth, black cherry and crème de cassis that is both exotic and elegant. The abundant fine grained tannins and youthful acids provide ample structure to this wine.



This vintage of our estate Merlot can be enjoyed immediately but we recommend it be bottle aged for at least 2 years and up to 10 for maximum enjoyment.

This cherry scented fruit is more tropical and less herbal, or Cabernet like, than ...more the 1999, probably because at David's suggestion Brian removed some of the surrounding forest to increase the amount of total sunlight. It is unlike any Merlot that we have ever tasted and is more reminiscent of a fine Pinot Noir. It should age extremely well, but is delicious today with salmon, sea bass, shellfish, and roast duck. We dare the character Miles from the movie Sideways to try this wine!!

2003 was an excellent vintage in Sonoma County. Cool weather in early spring was followed by good heat in the summer and ideal warm temperatures in September. This balance of weath ...moreer conditions allowed the grapes to experience a “long hang time” to develop rich flavors and ripe, supple tannins. With this vintage our winemaking focus continues its shift to smaller production lots using this concentrated fruit. The resulting wine demonstrates flavors of ripe plum, black cherry, cassis and spice. While the composition may vary slightly from vintage to vintage, this Bordeaux style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec consistently delivers the rich, full-bodied Merlot you have come to expect from Lambert Bridge Winery.

The complexity of this wine allows it to be partnered with a wide range of foods. Pair with mushroom ravioli, eggplant parmesan or chocolate fondue with strawberries.
