Merlot is a red wine grape that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and fleshiness, combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot an ideal grape to blend with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the most popular red wine varietals in the United States and Chile.

DaKine Vineyard, is nestled at the bottom of an east-facing hill on Westside Road in Healdsburg. The vineyard's original owner obtained budwood from the â€œ3 Palmsâ€ Merlot vineya ...morerd in Napa Valley and planted 3 acres on AXR1 rootstock in 1988. In addition, Â¾ acre of Malbec was established. In 1995 three more acres of Chardonnay (on 5C rootstock) were budded over to Merlot (unknown clone). In 2005, Oded bought the property from Mondavi/Arrowood and began farming the grapes. This is the first vintage Longboard made from these grapes.

â€œDaKineâ€ (pronounced Dah-kine) comes from the Pidgin Hawaiian language and is often used to describe a great event. Unlike most Merlots destined to be blended into other wines, we decided this vineyard makes a wine that is superb by itself. The 2005 DaKine Merlot is lush with vanilla and blueberry aromas that lead to a generous mid-palate of full and sweet tannins, soy and dark chocolate flavors. The finish is long and slightly spicy, we believe it will age well in the next 7 years.

The merlot for our 2006 vintage is a blend of vineyards from St.Helena, Rutherford, and South Napa. Each source varies in temperature, showcasing the differences in the Napa Valley ...more mesoclimates. Low yielding vines in the cooler regions of the Napa Valley helped produce small berries with impressive intensity while the warmer climate fruit is riper, with voluptuous texture, adding richness to the wine.

The Folie Ã Deux 2006 Merlot will tease your nose with blueberry and blackberry, with underlying hints of vanilla and a touch of cocoa. Berry cobbler flavors with touches of nutmeg will please your palate. Our Culinary Center Chefs favor Merlot for many of our trademark dishes. The fullness and richness of our Folie a Deux Merlot is the perfect accompaniment to our Grilled Lamb Loin with Deep Fried Parsnip Chips accented with a Dried Bing Cherry Reduction. Enjoy.

The Carmody McKnight and El Pomar Junction Vineyards are two wonderful sites for Paso Robles Merlot. Despite hot, windy conditions during June of 2003, little berry shatter occurre ...mored and we were blessed with a large set of small-berried Merlot clusters which produced a deeply pigmented and flavorful wine.

Fruit was hand-harvested, inoculated with cultured yeast, fermented in separate lots, then pressed together prior to barreling down. We employed 50% new Trust Hungarian oak, and 50% two to three year-old Demptos and Seguin Moreau thin stave Chateau-style barrels to age the wine 18 months. Prior to bottling, we added 13% Cabernet Franc to lift the aromatics and firm the structure of the wine. This dark Merlot has aromas of anise seed, ripe berry, olive and cigar box spices. On the palate, the wine is tightly structured with moderately firm, persistent tannins. Enjoy with grilled or lightly smoked foods, barbecued meats and braised root vegetables.

A fermentation was initiated, followed by a quick pressing, blended with grape spirits and barreled in French oak for 10 months to produce this classic dessert wine. A taste of nectar from the Merlot vineyards of Brutocao for you!

The 2003 vintage is very accessible and ready to drink with a wide range of dishes. This vintage of Merlot has a refreshing leanness to it, with a bright, tapered finish. Itâ€™s a focused wine, with smoky bark notes from a mix of mostly French and a bit of American oak. The flavors and aromas are forward, perfumed plush red fruit, and ripe without being overpowering â€“ a wine that goes with food. There is also a touch of cedar from the oak barrels. The combination of structure, depth and richness makes this 2003 Merlot drinkable now but it could easily age if you can wait. Please enjoy our 2003 Merlot with family and friends.
