This wine has been aged for 27 months in 80% French Oak and 20% American Oak of which 60% was new barrels and 40% second fill.

This grapeâ€™s typical black pepper component is backed by ...more cinnamon, leather, and a dusting of oak. The plum and pepper elements continue to the palate leading to a lingering dried fruit finish. Medium-bodied in style, this wine should be the perfect accompaniment for grilled beef, leg of lamb, and game dishes.

WINEMAKERS NOTES:
Produced predominately from old vine Petite Sirah first planted by our Grandfather over 70 years ago. These vines continue to yield a Petite Sirah of unusual depth and character. To add complexity to the nose we included a small portion of Santa Clara Valley Merlot. This wine should continue to open up and gain additional complexities in the bottle for at least another 5â€“8 years. The 2005 vintage yielded approximately 556 cases.

2001 Petite Sirah

This vintage was nothing short of a swan song. The winter was drier than usual, and most vines ran out of water before what we in Amador County call ripeness. Yet, our Petite Sirah ...more went nuts; it got way ripe. Dad had never let the Petite Sirah get that ripe before, and since he knew it was the last crop, we let it go. What the heck! We fermented in our half ton bins, hand punched four times per day, and pressed after seven days. We hand filled three barrels straight from the press and rolled them full into the barrel room. We racked twice, once on the early side to get the truly heavy lies out early. After a year in the barrel, we bottled. The Last Sirah yielded an impressive 97.25 cases.

The wine from these grapes is certainly dark with a surprising amount of fruitiness given that Petite Sirah has a reputation for being a cumbersome, tannic wine. Layers of fruit mingle with well-integrated oak, making this a wonderful wine to accompany strong cheeses and robust fare.

Our Petite Sirah comes from some of the oldest plantings in the region. The wine has full tannins, rich dark fruit of black plums with spice flavors of black pepper, brown sugar and vanilla, and a long lingering full flavored finish.
