Petite Sirah

It is definitely one of the grapes known as the Petite Sirah variety which is extensively planted in California, although other analysis has shown that in vineyards with the most reliable planting records it may only be one of three distinct varieties known collectively as Petite Sirah.

2005 Petite Sirah
Lodi

One can get lost looking into the deep, dark purple ink color of Ironstone’s 2004 Petite Sirah. This classic Petite is anything but…it’s a big, bold red wine filled with arom ...moreas of ripe plums, rhubarb and a hint of black cherries. This exceptionally full-bodied wine is loaded with ripe fruit flavors of blackberry, plum and dark cherry with a hint of peppery spice.

2004 Petite Sirah
Mencarini Vineyards - Lodi

The 2004 Petite Sirah is our very first release and a proud accomplishment. It is an opulent blend of 15% Lodi Zinfandel and 85% Lodi Petite Sirah, both from the Mencarini Vineyard ...mores.

The dark garnet plum color of this wine is enough to get any connoisseur interested. On the nose, this Petite opens with slightly spice and coffee aromas and continues with ripe Bing cherries and blackberries. With further aeration of the wine, the aroma profile develops with more ripened fruit flavors overpowering the spice. The mouth feel is well balanced for a young wine. The fuit flavors continue to ripen and start to pop while the finish leaves you wanting a second glass.

This wine would be best enjoyed with any beef or lamb dish, or even your favorite grilled eggplant recipe. Cheers!

2004 Petite Sirah Vista Grande
Paso Robles

For many years we have enjoyed Petite Sirah as wine that helps add complexity and depth to many varietals. The Vista Grande Vineyard has been an integral component, and this year w ...moree've produced a single vineyard bottling to showcase it's quality. The aromas in the wine contain a certain jamminess including blackberries and very ripe plums. The mouth is lush and full with a balance of oak flavors and moderate tannins. A great wine to complement any hearty grilled entrée. You will be able to enjoy this wine for many years.

2004 Petite Sirah
Sonoma County

Petite Sirah's story is a heartwarmer in more ways than one. Brought to California from France in the nineteenth century, it was planted alongside Zinfandel to lend oomph to that v ...morearietal. Somehow, in the supportive process, its own merits got eclipsed; not until the 1990s did scientists discover it's the genetic child of the noble Syrah. Since at that point Ravenswood had been working with old vineyards for 25 years, however, we were already aware of the power and integrity that this grape shows when vinified alone. Today the only remaining confusion comes from calling such a big, rich, thick, chewy, plummy, inky, peppery wine "petite."

2003 Durif
McDowell Valley

Durif is one of many grape varieties that is grown in the Rhône Valley of France and it is one of the varieties allowed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. Early in the 20th Century cu ...morettings of Durif from the Rhône Valley were shipped to California, but during this process the cuttings were given the name Petite Sirah. There really is no such thing as Petite Sirah in France, it was simply a name applied to the Durif grape when it was first brought over to the U.S. Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard has been labeling this variety by its “real” name since 1977.

Whatever you want to call it, this particular release has a massive structure which is balanced by an equally impressive depth of fruit and spicy, smoky complexity. The smoky, spicy elements are wrapped around a whole lot of blackberries and other dark fruit. This one needs a looooong wake-up call in the decanter at this point and should age for quite a few years. Have it with a nice cut of beef or lamb and it should work beautifully.

The grapes for this wine come from plantings in the McDowell Valley appellation of Mendocino county from 1948. These old vines produce wines with a lot of flavor intensity and the kin

2005 Private Reserve Petite Sirah
Santa Clara Valley

This very limited Guglielmo family specialty opens with dark plum and tart cherry fruit aromas with a potpourri of spice. This grape’s typical black pepper component is backed by ...more cinnamon, leather, and a dusting of oak. The plum and pepper elements continue to the palate leading to a lingering dried fruit finish. Medium-bodied in style, this wine should be the perfect accompaniment for grilled beef, leg of lamb, and game dishes.

WINEMAKERS NOTES:
Produced predominately from old vine Petite Sirah first planted by our Grandfather over 70 years ago. These vines continue to yield a Petite Sirah of unusual depth and character. To add complexity to the nose we included a small portion of Santa Clara Valley Merlot. This wine should continue to open up and gain additional complexities in the bottle for at least another 5–8 years. The 2005 vintage yielded approximately 556 cases.
