Petite Sirah

11676 visitors
It is definitely one of the grapes known as the Petite Sirah variety which is extensively planted in California, although other analysis has shown that in vineyards with the most reliable planting records it may only be one of three distinct varieties known collectively as Petite Sirah.

2001 Petite Sirah
Amador County

This vintage was nothing short of a swan song. The winter was drier than usual, and most vines ran out of water before what we in Amador County call ripeness. Yet, our Petite Sirah ...more went nuts; it got way ripe. Dad had never let the Petite Sirah get that ripe before, and since he knew it was the last crop, we let it go. What the heck! We fermented in our half ton bins, hand punched four times per day, and pressed after seven days. We hand filled three barrels straight from the press and rolled them full into the barrel room. We racked twice, once on the early side to get the truly heavy lies out early. After a year in the barrel, we bottled. The Last Sirah yielded an impressive 97.25 cases.

2004 Cliff Lede Petite Sirah
North Coast

A most surprising Petite Sirah, this 2004 offering from Cliff Lede Vineyards displays multiple layers of ever-evolving aromas and flavors. Upon initial opening, one is presented wi ...moreth dense aromas of pie cherry, kirsch, gardenia, cedar and mulberry. Given a little time to display itself, the aromatics evolve into syrah-like elements of violets, underbrush, and fresh blueberries, which finally progress into allspice and cola. The mouth opens with just a hint of lavender, quickly leading to a delicate and balanced palate of lush red fruits, elderberry jam, dark cherries and finishes with a lingering sensuous richness. This Petite Sirah was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

2004 Petite Sirah
Mencarini Vineyards - Lodi

The 2004 Petite Sirah is our very first release and a proud accomplishment. It is an opulent blend of 15% Lodi Zinfandel and 85% Lodi Petite Sirah, both from the Mencarini Vineyard ...mores.

The dark garnet plum color of this wine is enough to get any connoisseur interested. On the nose, this Petite opens with slightly spice and coffee aromas and continues with ripe Bing cherries and blackberries. With further aeration of the wine, the aroma profile develops with more ripened fruit flavors overpowering the spice. The mouth feel is well balanced for a young wine. The fuit flavors continue to ripen and start to pop while the finish leaves you wanting a second glass.

This wine would be best enjoyed with any beef or lamb dish, or even your favorite grilled eggplant recipe. Cheers!

2003 Mendocino Petite Syrah
Hear Arrow Ranch Vineyard

This lesser-known grape variety from the Rhône region of France is at its full expression in this 2003 Mendocino Petite Syrah. I translated my fascination for this grape variety i ...morento an inky-dark, earthy wine with a powerful structure surrounded by rich fruit flavors of plum, blackberry and black cherry. Add notes of violet, chocolate and cedar and you have a rich, complex wine that is delicious to drink now and will also age well in the bottle. The warm days and very cool nights of Mendocino County ensure a long hang time and fully-ripe fruit, necessary to tame the tannins of Petite Sirah. The hillside-grown grapes for this wine come from organically and biodynamically-farmed Heart Arrow Ranch. This wine is a perfect dinner party companion to grilled or roasted red meats, smoked turkey or osso buco. grilled vegetables, lamb stew and spicy pizzas.

2004 Petite Sirah
Sonoma County

Petite Sirah's story is a heartwarmer in more ways than one. Brought to California from France in the nineteenth century, it was planted alongside Zinfandel to lend oomph to that v ...morearietal. Somehow, in the supportive process, its own merits got eclipsed; not until the 1990s did scientists discover it's the genetic child of the noble Syrah. Since at that point Ravenswood had been working with old vineyards for 25 years, however, we were already aware of the power and integrity that this grape shows when vinified alone. Today the only remaining confusion comes from calling such a big, rich, thick, chewy, plummy, inky, peppery wine "petite."

2003 Durif
McDowell Valley

Durif is one of many grape varieties that is grown in the Rhône Valley of France and it is one of the varieties allowed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. Early in the 20th Century cu ...morettings of Durif from the Rhône Valley were shipped to California, but during this process the cuttings were given the name Petite Sirah. There really is no such thing as Petite Sirah in France, it was simply a name applied to the Durif grape when it was first brought over to the U.S. Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard has been labeling this variety by its “real†name since 1977.

Whatever you want to call it, this particular release has a massive structure which is balanced by an equally impressive depth of fruit and spicy, smoky complexity. The smoky, spicy elements are wrapped around a whole lot of blackberries and other dark fruit. This one needs a looooong wake-up call in the decanter at this point and should age for quite a few years. Have it with a nice cut of beef or lamb and it should work beautifully.

The grapes for this wine come from plantings in the McDowell Valley appellation of Mendocino county from 1948. These old vines produce wines with a lot of flavor intensity and the kin
