Mourvedre
250 visitors
Mourvèdre, is a variety of red wine grape grown around the world. In Portugal and the New World it is known as Mataró, whilst in some parts of France it is known as Estrangle-Chien ("dog strangler").
It produces tannic wines that can be high in alcohol, and is most successful in Rhone-style blends. It has a particular affinity for Grenache, softening it and giving it structure. Its taste varies greatly according to area, but often has a wild, gamey or earthy flavour, with soft fruit flavours of blackberry. | | More information on Mourvedre | | Food Pairing: Pairs well with hearty country food such as turkey dinners, pork roasts and vegetables. A great wine for a winter meal of chicken and dumplings. |

2005 Jade Mountain Mourvèdre Contra Costa County
We briefly soaked the grapes for the 2005 Jade Mountain Mourvèdre after crushing, and then fermented them for about two weeks. Following fermentation, we pressed and settled the wi ...morene, with malolactic fermentation taking place in barrel. Racking the wine after malolactic fermentation kept the clear, bright fruit up in front. We aged the wine in French oak barrels for 10 months. The 2005 Jade Mountain Mourvèdre has an intriguing smoky character and aromas of ripe black cherry and raspberry. On the palate the wine is ripe and true to type, with black-cherry flavors and subtle hints of apricot. The finish is smooth, almost creamy, with a touch of chocolate raspberry and a bit of tannin. Enjoy this wine paired with braised beef, roast pork or veal stew. |

2004 Mourvedre Pagani Vineyard, Sonoma Valley
As popular as Mourvedre is in the south of France, it has kept a very low profile in California. But for those who already appreciate this silky-soft Rhône varietal, the smal ...morel production of this wine will be memorable. The grapes were grown on the famed Pagani Vineyard in Sonoma Valley—a vineyard known for highly acclaimed Zinfandels—and hand-picked at the peak of ripeness. The 2004 vintage of the Pagani Vineyard Mourvedre is of medium weight with moderate tannins and is one of the biggest Mourvedres to date from the Pagani Vineyard. It boasts spicy cherry and berry flavors and pairs wonderfully with all kinds of food. Made in a very limited quantity, this single-vineyard wine is available only at the Winery.

2005 Mourvedre Davis Vineyard, Lodi
We think we've discovered the trick for making really yummy Mourvedre. Mourvedre always has been a spicy grape, but sometimes we wanted more than just cardamom, cumin and allspice. ...more All of these are present in full force in our 05 Mo, and we're pleased as pie to have them. However, there's also more than just spice. This Mo has blackberry jam, brown sugar and lilac in the nose followed by rich, jammy fruit in the mouth. This combination of fruit and spice makes it a great wine to pair with Indian or Thai food. What is the trick? Come in and ask the winemakers! Otherwise, you'll just have to enjoy the results.

2003 Mourvedre Blue Oak Vineyard, Paso Robles
The early vintages of this wine, from the young vines were dominated by the fruitiness of the grapes, but as the vines maturing the fruit flavors are becoming less dominant. The st ...moreone fruit flavors of apricots and peaches that I find a bit unusual in a red wine are still there, just more subtle, and the result is a thoroughly enjoyable wine. As is typical with southern Rhone varieties, another Rhone variety, in this case Grenache was blended with the Mourvedre to add complexity and balance. The eleven percent of Grenache is hardly noticeable, but shows mostly in the fruit of the nose and in the smooth, full finish. This wine is typical of our “style”, with great color, full mouth feel and forward fruit. |

Mourvedre (known as "Mataro" in Portugal & the New World, & "Monastrell" in Spain) drives the blend comprising 80% of the total, while the balance is Estate Petite Sirah and Estate ...more Zinfandel. Perfumed aromas of crushed blackberries with a hint of toasty oak and clove. In the mouth the wine shows off full round flavors of deep, black cherry, spice and a hint of mocha. It finishes bright and lush with a touch of minerality. Pair this with roasted or grilled Spring lamb, rosemary beef kabobs, roasted herb chicken, spicy paella & earthy wild mushroom rosotto.
