Sometimes referred to as Gewürz or Traminer, Gewurztraminer is a white wine grape variety that performs best in cooler climates. It is known for its spicy characteristics. The name literally means Spice Traminer, and derives from the grape being a highly aromatic variant of its parent, simply called Traminer.

Our Valley Oaks style is made with a traditional taste profile, just a bit sweet but oh so perfect at holi ...moreday or any time you need a wine to complement a meal. Crisp acidity is a hallmark of this wine. Grapes are sourced from cool-climate regions of California (hot weather just won’t do for this varietal) and we treat the grapes to a slow, cold fermentation averaging 50° in nothing but stainless steel tanks. The absence of oak is purposeful.

Each year I produce a small lot of Gewürztraminer from a 30-year-old vineyard in the Anderson Valley, which is clearly the best area in California for the variety. Inspired by Alsa ...moretian wines, the Corazon is fermented to dryness. Made this way, Gewürztraminer cries out for food.

The 2004 is my favorite Corazón Gewürztraminer to date. Budbreak was early in 2004 and the rest of the season continued apace, resulting in the earliest harvest in anyone's memory. The ripening season was very even, with no extreme heat spikes, yielding grapes of uncommon intensity. Complex aromas include pear, honeysuckle, honeycomb, wildflowers, lychee, grapefruit zest and chamomile. The flavors are rich with citron and vanilla flavors and subtle spice notes. Creamy and full in the mouth, it has a long crisp finish.

We have sourced the grapes for our Gewürztraminer from the same vineyard in the Russian River Valley AVA for over twenty years. The gentle sloping terrain on the vineyards allows ...more for good soil drainage and healthy vines that produce concentrated grapes with intense varietal character. We harvested the grapes for this wine on September 18 and 21, 2006.

Our 2006 Gewürztraminer exhibits the typical varietal aromas of rose petal and lychee. These floral, perfumed aromas are balanced with zesty tangerine peel and grapefruit on the nose. A long, slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks ensures that the wine retains these bright aromatics. A soft mouthfeel and balanced citrus flavors of lemon and grapefruit lead to a clean finish.

Mango, papaya and crisp pear greet the palate. The fruit is set atop a creamy texture which comes from the fermentation and partial aging in old, French oak barrels. Combined with the fruit are distinct spice elements like clove or pumpkin pie, a trademark of this varietal. One of the ultimate food wines, Gewurztraminer will pair with a range of food from light, Asian cuisine to traditional Thanksgiving day foods like turkey and stuffing.

Our Late Harvest Gewurztraminer is superb served all by itself, or excellent with a wide variety of fruity desserts. I am particularly fond of this wine with pate at the commencement of the meal, or just with fruit at the meal's end.
