The vineyards are now replanted to Sangiovese, Zinfandel and Merlot, with a little bit of Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah for fun and blending, respectively. We started harvesting our first crops from the estate in 1998, Sangiovese in 1999. The soil and climate at Benessere, clay-loam with gravelly bands, are perfect for growing Sangiovese and Merlot. The soil allows for good drainage and the climate is very similar to that in Tuscany, where the greatest Sangiovese in the world is grown … for now.

2005 Sorridente
St. Helena

Sorridente means smile in Italian, and it is our hope that this delicious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Aglianico will make your day a little brighter and cause you to sm ... moreile. The 2005 Sorridente is a big wine that has great aging potential. The deep purple hue is consistent with the blackberry, plum nose. There are notes of cocoa powder and rose petal and a definitive "Italianesque" bouquet that makes itself more apparent after the wine opens in the glass. It is an excellent pair with substantial dishes such as rack of lamb, veal shank and aged, hard cheeses. Enjoy at joyous occasions both grand and humble.

2005 Sangiovese
St. Helena

Benessere Sangiovese is a most versatile wine to pair with foods. It has the elegance and finesse to pair with delicate dishes and the structure to serve with more intensely flavor ... moreed and spicy foods as well. Plum and blackberry fruit intermingle with a traditional and unmistakable violet and spice. This wine will age well for ten-plus years and develop more complexity and character with age. Enjoy our Sangiovese with friends and family on all occasions, both simple and extravagant!

2004 Phenomenon
St. Helena

Phenomenon embodies the pinnacle of winemaking at Benessere. It is produced only in quantities commensurate with our highest expectations. As such, we feel that Phenomenon is a win ... moree that is age-worthy and substantial enough to pair with hearty dishes as well as elegant fare. This wine has aromas and flavors of dark, ripe cherries and plums, with notes of creamy and toasty oak, and a hint of vanilla. It is perfect to share with friends and family and to toast all joyous occasions. It will age well for the next decade or more.

This is the fifth release of our “Super-Napan” estate blend called “Phenomenon”. The blending of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah is a relatively new “phenomenon” for California. As such, we think it is fitting to name our wine after this occurrence. It is also patterned after some of the “Super-Tuscan” wines of Italy; wines which have crossed the boundaries of regulations and tradition, utilizing superior grape clones and artisan blending to make the best wine possible.
