Merlot is a red wine grape that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Merlot-based wines usually have medium body with hints of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and fleshiness, combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot an ideal grape to blend with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the most popular red wine varietals in the United States and Chile.

Last year's Merlot received 93 ...more Points from Wine & Spirits Magazine straight out of the gate, so this ones sure to be a quick mover and a delight to all who take her home.



The mouthfeel shows off the luscious mountain fruit, while the silky tannins remind you of earth and chalk - typical Howell Mountain trademarks. The nose is intense, with aromas of blackberries, provencial herbs, and the usual hints of mushrooms, chalk and earth that our wines always turn up. The finish tracks the aromas and palate with the addition of just a hint of spicy oak - and cinnamon, and the wine is so firm and balanced, you only notice the oak as the gentle, "velvet glove" holding it all in place.

Beautifully ripened Bliss Vineyard block #6 Merlot was crushed then soaked for three ...moredays to extract soft, chocolate/cherry flavors and generate a rose blush. A fermentation was initiated, followed by a quick pressing, blended with grape spirits and barreled in French oak for 10 months to produce this classic dessert wine. The 2004 growing season produced a small crop of merlot which was crushed and fermeneted with Pasteur red yeast for three weeks before pressing off, then racked to French oak barre ...morels where it aged for nineteen months. The addition of cabernet franc adds structure and a bit of spiciness to the final product. Aromas of sweet cherry, anise, and clove give way to flavors of forest floor, cedar, clove, black raspberry and oak. A firm backbone of tannin supports the wine without getting in the way of the flavor and ensures the wine will age for years to come. But don't wait years to try it!

The 2003 vintage is very accessible and ready to drink with a wide range of dishes. This vintage of Merlot has a refreshing leanness to it, with a bright, tapered finish. It’s a focused wine, with smoky bark notes from a mix of mostly French and a bit of American oak. The flavors and aromas are forward, perfumed plush red fruit, and ripe without being overpowering – a wine that goes with food. There is also a touch of cedar from the oak barrels. The combination of structure, depth and richness makes this 2003 Merlot drinkable now but it could easily age if you can wait. Please enjoy our 2003 Merlot with family and friends.
