Davis Family Vineyards is located on a ridge top in the center of California’s renowned Russian River Valley. We have Zinfandel vines that were planted in 1896, and young hillside plantings of Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay. We also make a few barrels of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with grapes from friends like the Dutton Family, who have deliciously distinctive vineyards. We are a small family winery that thinks everything matters from vineyard to bottle. We make only small lots of wine and literally handcraft each and every one. We are passionate in our pursuit and believe wine is an essential element in a rich and wonderful life---adding a delicious layer to both meals and to friendships. | Santa Rosa, CA Phone: (866) 338-9463 Website: http://www.davisfamilyvineyards.com Appellation: Northern Sonoma Map to Davis Family Vineyards

2003 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
A harmonious blend from 2 dynamic vineyards in Napa Valley! The grapes for the majority of the blend come from the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains at the Rutherford - St. Hele ... morena border. This vineyard brings aromas and flavors of exotic spice, violets and loads of lush cherry and red current. The nuances of black fruits, cocoa, coffee and tobacco come from the small one acre vineyard we tend north of Calistoga. The combination creates layers of pleasure that seem to never stop unfolding.

Sauvignon Blanc

2005 Gusto Sauvignon Blanc
I made Sauvignon Blanc for years in California, and it has long been a favorite wine to drink because of its crisp, refreshing character. I have always preferred my Sauvignon Blanc ... more in the more vibrant style, without the heavy character of oak barrels, a style I started to admire coming out of New Zealand wineries in the 90’s. Well, the seasons in New Zealand are opposite those here in the Northern Hemisphere, so when my California vineyards are sleepy and quiet, awaiting the arrival of Spring – it is Fall in New Zealand and the grapes are starting to ripen! In 1998 I arranged to work the harvest in the Northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, in a region called Marlborough. I went to study and experience the winemaking styles and techniques, although what I discovered is a microclimate that turns the Sauvignon Blanc grape into distinctive and delicious flavor reflections. The Cook’s Straight which separates New Zealand’s two islands, creates a constant funnel of marine breezes, continually cooling the coastal vineyards. The soils are rich in calcareous deposits, the benefit of the island geography. This translates into vigorous vines and long growing seasons.

2005 Chardonnay Russian River Valley
Mother nature was unusually cooperative this vintage and helped to make this perhaps our best Chardonnay to date. It was a late October harvest from two Russian River locations: th ... moree majority from the Dutton Ranch and the rest, a Meursault clone, from our estate vineyard. After small-lot, whole cluster pressing, 90% of the lots were fermented with native yeasts for increased complexity. 80% of the wine was barrel fermented using only Allier and Trancais oak, and just 1/3 of the barrels were new. The tight grain of these cold climate forests gives subtle flavor extraction and adds a toasty note without ever making the wines taste “oaky”. We did daily lees stirring early in the fermentation for added texture, then racked off the lees (using only gravity to preserve the delicate aromas) once malolactic fermentation was finished. The result? Exotic tropical aromas give way to the benchmark citrus notes of this cool region, and in the mouth the layers of flavor unfold in a yin/yang-like dichotomy of lush fruit with crisp acidity wrapped in vibrant and rounded textures. Dee-licious!

Syrah

2005 Syrah, "Guyzer Block" Russian River Valley
Harvesting late in the season can be scary as winemakers hang their fruit while praying for no rain. And when you START your Syrah harvest on Halloween, well, that’s downright te ... morerrifying! But mild, dry weather prevailed and we held off picking his steep, hillside estate Syrah until it was at the peak of perfection. We planted Chave Clone Syrah in this vineyard in 1996 and we follow the Cote Rotie tradition of fermenting the Syrah with about 2% Viognier grapes. The results are staggering. The wine shows cool-climate blackberry fruit with beefy notes all at the same time, and with only 15% new oak aging, the pure fruit quality really comes through. We dropped half of all the Syrah fruit in the vineyard to insure that the tannins were totally ripe, and the resulting texture is pure crushed velvet. The hints of white pepper on the finish keep the palate intrigue going. It's everything you love about the exotic nature of Syrah with a pretty-side that you will not be able to leave alone. This 2005 already took home top honors at the 2007 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition... even before its official release!

Zinfandel

2005 Zinfandel, Old Vine Russian River Valley
Old Vine? Perhaps “Ancient Vine” is a better designation. This vineyard was planted in 1896 and Guy acquired it (it sits at the foot of his property) 100 years later. These old ... more-timers tend to ripen unevenly, so instead of harvesting both ripe and overripe fruit, Guy took the fanatical route and made several passes through the vineyard, picking only the perfectly ripe clusters each pass, over the 2 week period. The small lots were fermented separately and married together before going into his 2 and 3-year-old Pinot Noir barrels (no new oak to mask the amazing brambly, Old-Vine, brown spice flavors). The 2005 absolutely jumps out of the glass. The fresh raspberry aromas would make a perfume designer jealous! Fresh, juicy, forward fruit - The wine is medium-bodied and never heavy-handed, and you will find yourself at the bottom of your glass well before you know it. Better have 2 bottles on hand. It also grabbed top honors at the 2007 San Francisco Wine Competition this Spring!
