Davis Family Vineyards Zinfandel |
2005 Zinfandel, Old Vine Russian River Valley
Old Vine? Perhaps “Ancient Vine” is a better designation. This vineyard was planted in 1896 and Guy acquired it (it sits at the foot of his property) 100 years later. These old-timers tend to ripen unevenly, so instead of harvesting both ripe and overripe fruit, Guy took the fanatical route and made several passes through the vineyard, picking only the perfectly ripe clusters each pass, over the 2 week period. The small lots were fermented separately and married together before going into his 2 and 3-year-old Pinot Noir barrels (no new oak to mask the amazing brambly, Old-Vine, brown spice flavors). The 2005 absolutely jumps out of the glass. The fresh raspberry aromas would make a perfume designer jealous! Fresh, juicy, forward fruit - The wine is medium-bodied and never heavy-handed, and you will find yourself at the bottom of your glass well before you know it. Better have 2 bottles on hand. It also grabbed top honors at the 2007 San Francisco Wine Competition this Spring! |
