Margerum Wine Company

After twenty years in the wine business it had always been a dream of mine to have a small production winery where I did most of the work myself. I have a 240 square foot temperature controlled space behind the Brander Vineyards facility in Los Olivos that is certainly the smallest bonded winery in the county. The term being bantered around in France for what I am doing is a production called "garagiste" - though my space is smaller than a garage. The "garagiste" philosophy, for me, is that I am part of a growing group of vintners looking to return wine making to its previous form of production – hand-crafted and personal. Working with connotations of nature, stressing individuality, and making a production on a human scale. I strive to make wines that I personally enjoy and I my hope is others will enjoy them as well. The approach to this is the antithesis of mass production. I choose to make wines that are distinctive, have a place and personality to them, and are made to my own standards.

2006 M5

2006 was a great Grenache year and the trick to this years wine , as it is every year, is to balance the crimson, aromatic, lean, bright, tight, crangrape, (crangrape is a made up ... moreword) tobacco, smoky, leather, earthy, Grenache, Counoise, Mourvèdre, Cinsault based components with the bombastic, dark, black, licorice, plum, fruity tannic, bold, intense ripe, full-bodied Syrah I make.

2007 Riesling
Santa Rita Hills

Bottled in February but saving it for summer. It is a perfectly refreshing quaff for a hot day poolside. It is low in alcohol. I’m a fan and I will drink most of this myself.

2007 Rosé

Each year we bleed off (siphoning it out of the must using a commercial kitchen sieve) a bit of Purisima Mountain Grenache to make our dry rose. It ferments in a little 300 liter ... morestainless steel tank along with the whites to dryness in the cold room. Just before bottling we add back in some of the Grenache from barrel to give the wine its distinctive color and seriousness. The upshot is a rose wine that is structured, has a bit of tannin, and is a perfect springtime picnic wine.

2005 Syrah
Colson Canyon Vineyard

Um, wow. This stuff is really good. It is so Colson Canyon. This vineyard gives the most savage, earthy, spice, raw meat, dried blood Syrah that I work with. While some of my 2 ... more005 Syrahs are lighter than previous years, this years Colson is the most expressive and complex Colson I have ever produced. It literally gushes out of the glass; full of exotic spice, pepper, and plum fruit.

2005 Syrah
Great Oaks Ranch Vineyard

The 2005 is hedonism in a bottle. When you drink it, let some drip down your chin and eat a leg of lamb like a barbarian. This is the perfect wine for Pagan rituals. Un-fined and ... more unfiltered, so don't freak out on me if there is a little sediment - remember: that is a good thing.

Vintage 2005 produced very flavorful fruit even before the grapes were technically ripe and this years Purisima is leaner and lighter than years past. Always the classiest, the 20 ... more05 should bode well for cellar time and, as always, these wines are made for the table and fine dining. The wine is aged in 100% new François Frères barrels.
