It all starts in the vineyard with what Mother Nature "dishes" out to the vines and 2006 was a wild one! We had a cold wet spring with 52 inches of rain vs. 30 as well as a delayed bud break of about 2 weeks. We even had two measurable snowfalls in March!! I've been here since 1990 and I've seen a dusting only once. For a while it looked like we would not start harvesting until mid October. Then the July heat wave hit...14 straight days of over 105 degrees! I was able to see this one coming and started irrigating to help the vines through the heat spell. The six weeks leading up to harvest were perfect; 90 degree days and cool nights. However, the heat injection in July caused all the grapes to produce sugar before the acid and PH would be in balance. Having said that, the harvest was drawn out as I let the grapes "hang on the vine" to mature slowly and all went well. | Plymouth, CA Phone: (209) 245-6016 Website: http://www.wilderottervineyard.com Appellation: California Shenandoah Valley Map to Wilderotter Vineyard & Winery
