As a California native from a wine-loving family, I learned early that raising a glass with friends is more than a simple pleasure; it’s a chance to revel and celebrate, to share and appreciate the joys of the moment. Naturally, while doing those things, I developed a taste for good California wine.

That’s why I love making California wine. But not just anywhere and not just any wine. Up and down the state, only the best viticultural areas enjoy a rare balance of sunshine, cool nights and morning fog that allows grapes to fully ripen each year while giving them enough time on the vine to develop mature, complex flavors. When it comes to making wine, that is perhaps the greatest California gift.

Our goal is to take full advantage of this gift. To capture a bit of the best California has to offer in every bottle, creating wines that are proud of their bold fruit and yet still able to seduce you with their nuance and finesse. In short, wines that will keep all of us savoring—and reveling—‘til the very last sip.

2006 Pinot Noir, Stiling Vineyard
Russian River Valley

Dark ruby in color with a bright raspberry nose and a hint of forest floor — did I actually write that? — sorry, but sometimes it’s hard to find the proper words: an elusive ... morecombination of pine needles, faint eucalyptus, dry leaves, moist earth. . . I hope that’s a smidge more helpful. All followed by fresh and lively strawberry, cola nut and touch of nutmeg on the palate with moderate tannins and good acidity to see them through to the lingering finish.

Displays the expressive fruit reminiscent of our ’04 Stiling combined with the elegance and greater restraint of the ’05.

2006 Pinot Noir, Windsor Oaks Vineyard
Russian River Valley

Our first vintage working with four separate blocks from a site that already shows us its potential to be outstanding. At first sniff, pomegranate, rose petals and cherries rise up ... more to greet you. Then an epicurean sip unveils ripe red cherry, plumb and fig wrapped in a velvet mouthfeel with a hint of tea leaves on the finish. A lighter ruby-hued, medium-bodied wine showcasing the silky elegance of a classic Pinot. We look forward to getting to know this vineyard and to crafting wines from their fruit for many years to come.

2006 Chardonnay
Russian River Valley

A slightly richer gold in hue than its Sonoma Coast sibling, this one is more of a showboat right off the dock. Exotic floral aromas mingle with scents of ripe pear and baking spic ... morees that lure you in to discover more pear, apricot, honeydew melon and butterscotch on the palate. A broad and expansive finish leads us to believe it will be ready for its maiden voyage soon enough. That said, we humbly suggest giving it a couple extra months rest in the bottle before setting sail.

While crisp acidity ensures it will be an excellent companion to food, this Chardonnay should also lend itself to solo sipping and evolve into a genuine pool-side pleasure come summertime.

2006 Chardonnay
Sonoma Coast

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? No, let's not. More like a crisp fall day with blue skies, bright sunshine and an invigorating chill in the air. Light golden straw in color ... more, with a clear almost green tinge at the edges, this youngster leads with a nose of pure citrus and minerality followed by a palate of lemon, lime, tart Granny Smith apple and pineapple, with hints of peach and just a touch of vanilla custard. All backed by mouth-watering acidity and a high-toned, laser-like finish that lasts all the way to the horizon and back.

A tremendous food Chardonnay (wait. . . do they exist? Yes they do!) — tightly wound upon release, it will only gain in texture and body as it matures. We recommend at least 6 - 8 months cellar time before opening up your first bottle in the later days of '08.

2005 Syrah, Kalen's Big Boy Blend
Sonoma County

True to the spirit of its name, Kalen’s Big Boy Blend must have a big personality. That said, the cooler '05 vintage added a splash of refinement to this high-spirited bottling a ... mores well.

Inky dark in the glass, the nose offers up rich, black fruit, black and white pepper, a faint tease of eucalyptus and fertile earth tones. Then a sip unleashes dark cherry, pomegranate, black licorice and cola nut, all lovingly embraced by fine, sweet tannins. While a tad of patience will be handsomely rewarded, if you decide to open one sooner rather than later, a brisk decanting and a couple of hours on the table will enhance it’s youthful charms.

2005 Syrah, Dry Stack Vineyard
Bennett Valley

With our third vintage of Dry Stack Syrah we’re beginning to get a clearer picture of what this vineyard is all about. We’ve seen it hot ('03 & '04) and we’ve seen it cool (' ... more05) but certain characteristics shine through each year.

Aromas of cherries, dark plum and tobacco invite you in, followed by a palate of lively cherry infused with darker fruit undertones, a touch of smoky cedar and a silky, elegant mouthfeel. Delicious now (with 1-2 hours of decanting) the balance of fruit and acidity is delightful, making this a wine that should age wonderfully for years to come.

This year’s Port is blend of Syrah from the Janian Vineyard in Sonoma Mountain, Cabernet Sauvignon from our Alexander Valley property, and a small percentage of Merlot. Like the previous vintage, this is rich, smooth and complex, with flavors of red berry, black cherry and a bit of baking spice. W ...
