Brassfield Estate Winery Syrah |
2002 Brassfield Estate Syrah Round Mountain Vineyard
This signature vineyard of five and a half acres was planted in 2001 and represents the first Syrah produced from the Monte Sereno vineyard located at 2100 ft. in elevation on the western slopes of High Valley. The soils on this ridge top are primarily broken shale characteristic of Franciscan formation. Much of this vineyard has a northern exposure which delays ripening by a couple of weeks giving the fruit some additional “hang-time”, and subsequently softer, velvety tannins.
The grapes were allowed to ripen to full maturity, and then were crushed, destemmed and the must was inoculated for yeast fermentation. The wine was left on the skins for 11 days before gently pressing off the skins to avoid harsher tannin extraction, and allowed to finish primary and secondary fermentations before settling and racking to barrel. Approximately 30% new oak was infused to the entire lot and allowed to age for 22 months before bottling. |
