The purpose of this role is threefold. The first of these is to manage and continue developing a technical services department in Paicines that ensures the strict and effective control of wine quality from crushing, through aging to shipping for bottling. This will include development and implementation of laboratory analytical procedures to support winemaking, as well as a proactive revision program for these procedures to assure best practices are implemented. This will also include quality assurance and quality control procedures where applicable to assure product integrity. The second purpose is to ensure continuity in the wine quality assurance programs associated with the bulk wines for export that are shipped both from Paicines as well as a number of 3rd party providers. This will include ensuring that lab analyses including micro checks from all exporting facilities are timely, accurate, within specification, and that these results are properly communicated. It will also include building strong relationships with stakeholders, to include those in-house as well as our 3rd party producers and shipping partners. The third purpose is to support the implementation of quality requirements mandated by Diageo’s good manufacturing practices audit. The primary responsibility in this area will be to lead the implementation at Paicines, but additional responsibilities will include supporting good manufacturing practices implementation at other Central Coast sites, such as Chalone and Edna Valley.

Complexity of Role:
This role requires an excellent working knowledge of common laboratory analyses, to include microbiology, and Good Manufacturing Practices, as this role will be required to scrutinize both lab analyses and cellar sanitation practices in-house as well for our 3rd party producers. And though a detailed understanding of regulations is not necessary, a basic understanding of beverage alcohol regulation is required to assist in assuring compliance for both domestic and international regulations.

Management Responsibility:
This role will manage 3 fulltime lab technicians in addition to temporary harvest associates as required. Indirectly, this role will also be required to assist other functional managers and personnel implement new and revised methods and procedures where necessary.

Key Outputs/Deliverables:
1. Management the Paicines laboratory, to include people management, assuring precision and accuracy in lab analyses, implementation of best practices /methods where applicable, budget management, and lab equipment upkeep, and CAPEX.
2. Oversee processes and quality control for bulk wine export.
3. Implement/formalize systems and procedures to improve compliance with Good Manufacturing practices requirements
4. Actively engage winemakers to facilitate quality improvements in wines through technical expertise and implementation of new analytical technology and methodology.

Qualifications:
Experience:
· Strong leadership skills and departmental management experience
· BA/BS in Chemistry, Enology or related sciences or combination of education and experience preferred.
· 5+ years experience managing a lab preferable
· Thorough understanding of wine production (fermentation through bottling)
