Zinfandel is grown by over 200 producers, and now accounts for over 23% of the total vineyard territory. Its quality and character largely depend on the place of cultivation, the age of the vineyard, and the winemaking technology. Zinfandel became so popular that in 1991 the association of Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP) was founded with the objective to promote the varietal and wine, and support scientific research on Zinfandel - particularly its origin.

2003 Late Harvest Zinfandel

The Nadeau Family Vintners' 2003 "Late Harvest" Zinfandel is another big, blockbuster Zin which is made for after-dinner quaffing. While somewhat sweet, the balance of sugar, acid, ...more and oak have yielded a wine fit for chocolate truffles, strong blue-type cheeses, or a fine dark-wrapped cigar (for smoking, not eating!). Both lots of grapes for this wine were dry-farmed and head-pruned, and the wine reflects this. Its 100% Zinfandel. With its jammy, sweet cherry-fruit aromas and flavors, this wine is an ideal accompaniment to chocolate desserts and stimulating conversation. The 2003 Vintage yielded only 94 cases of 375 mL bottles.

Focused aromas of cherries, spice, roasted coffee, and oak vanillin lead way to more funky aromas of earth and minerals. The Grenache adds a perfumed, spicy fruitiness to the aroma ...mores. The Petite Sirah fills in the middle palate with meaty, darker fruit flavors.

Another vintage with a higher percentage of Zinfandel in the blend shows bright, upfront fruitiness on the palate with a long, lingering berry finish. There is greater structure and acidity than our previous vintages with the chalky tannins from Redwood Valley fruit peaking through the finish. The fruit is packed tight and juicy, adding zest to the firm structured finish. The 2005 has excellent cellaring potential and will be soft, supple and smooth in five to ten years.

Bright ...moreraspberry combines with toasted oak forming the core of the aromatics. Hints of peaches and nectarines add to the intensity of fruitiness as the aromas tiptoe toward spices and black fruits. Berry flavors intensify on the pallet with a lingering, tangy citrus finish. Like previous vintages it is great before dinner as an aperitif, on ice around the pool, or with a cheese plate and chocolate dessert just sitting by the fireplace. Careful consumption is recommended because the alcohol can creep up and bite your head the next morning.

2004 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel

2004 was all about structure in the Dry Creek region of Sonoma. The vineyards ripened evenly throughout the season and at harvest we found a small percentage of raisins on the clus ...moreters, providing the wine with tremendous fruit on the nose and palate while giving us solid acid structure not diluted by concentrated, sweet juice. After a long 18 day fermentation and 7 days of extended juice to skin contact, the wine was put into 90% neutral oak and 10% new French oak and aged for 18 months before bottling.

This wine bursts with wonderful aromas and flavors of raspberry and blackberry while the beautiful vanilla sweetness from the new French oak barrels creates a lingering, memorable finish. This is a complete wine that is sure to please.
