Pinot Noir

15890 visitors
Pinot noir is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name may also refer to wines produced predominantly from pinot noir grapes. The name is derived from the french words for pine and black alluding to the varietals tightly clustered dark purple pine cone shaped bunches of fruit.

Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. In De re rustica, Columella described a grape variety in Burgundy in the 1st century A.D. that sounds like Pinot noir. It is widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, but is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine.

Russian River Valley

Our Pinot Noir's are from our River Terrace vineyards located in close proximity to the Russian River where many summer days of late breaking morning fog create an excellent climat ...moree for this early maturing grape. This is an elegant noble wine with silky seductive flavors of black cherry, plum, strawberry and spice. Aged 18 months in a combination of 45% new French and American oak yields perfumed bouquet aromas with velvet texture and supple mouthfeel. Enjoy this wine with lighter meats, veal, poultry, shellfish, salmon and fancy dishes.

Aromas of strawberry, cinnamon bark, earth, and forest floor. On the palate strawberry, cherry and clove with a pleasing brightness. A delicious, medium-bodied wine. The main bo ...moredy of the wine comes from a field selection named for Joseph Swan, who brought in the original budwood from Burgundy. Although finicky even by Pinot standards, Swan can produce mouthwatering wines that showcase terroir and combine fruit, undergrowth (“sousboisâ€) and spice in a unique way among Pinot grapes.

Cuvee of wine from Bien Nacido, Laetitia, Rimrock, and Solomon Hills
Mostly cool, windy conditions at these locations are optimal for growing Pinot Noir. This blend has com ...morebined aspects of multiple premium vineyards in the same general area.

Aged in a combination of neutral and newer French oak for 14 months:
30% in 2 year old barrels
40% in 3 year old barrels
20% in 1 year old barrels
10% in new barrel
Coopers: Cadus, Seguin Moreau, Demptos
Forests: Center of France, Vosges with medium toast

The winemaking of this delicate fruit was approached with the idea of using more than one method to achieve greater structure and sophistication. Pinot Noir from four vineyards was included in the final blend. Whole cluster fermentation was used with only the Laetitia fruit, a fermentation of intact clusters as picked from the vine with no intervention of machines – all stems and berries are intact. This technique contributed to achieving a wine of greater complexity.

After fermentation, the wine was handled with the least possible intervention. Racking was minimized, and no fining was performed before a light filtration.

2005 Pinot Noir, Cargasacchi Vineyard
Santa Rita Hills

This small 16-acre vineyard has become one of the stars of the Santa Rita Hills appellation. Planted in 1998, the property features Clone 115 Pinot Noir planted on 3309 rootstock. ...moreThe vineyard is located at the extreme west end of Santa Rita Hills, where its proximity to the Pacific Ocean makes it one of the coolest vineyards in California. The soil type is the Botella Series, a composition of both clay and loam that has a fairly high calcareous content, which drains well and helps moderate yields.

Pinot Noir clusters from the Cargasacchi Vineyard were hand sorted before being de-stemmed and immediately chilled for a pre-fermentation cold soak where the most beneficial extraction of color, aroma and flavor occurs. During fermentation, concentration was enhanced by gently punching down the cap. As soon as the wine reached dryness, it was pressed and transferred to 60-gallon French oak barrels where it aged for 17 months. About 45% of the barrels were new French oak.

This Pinot Noir is deeply concentrated, seamless and complex—the combined result of pure vineyard expression, cellar complexity and oak barrel infusion. Rich aromas of wild blackberry and ripe plum a
