Pinot Noir

15886 visitors
Pinot noir is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name may also refer to wines produced predominantly from pinot noir grapes. The name is derived from the french words for pine and black alluding to the varietals tightly clustered dark purple pine cone shaped bunches of fruit.

Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. In De re rustica, Columella described a grape variety in Burgundy in the 1st century A.D. that sounds like Pinot noir. It is widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, but is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine.

2005 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch
Keefer Ranch

Keefer Ranch is owned and managed by Marcy Keefer along with her son Craig Strehlow. The vineyard has 50 planted acres, 20 to Chardonnay and 30 to Pinot Noir. Located in the heart ...moreof Green Valley, the site has a superb micro-climate, offering just the right amount of warmth during the day and very cool nights which leads to grapes that produce an intensely red fruited wine with strong natural acidity and focus. We were fortunate to obtain a small allocation of fruit in 2005 which consisted of three clones; Pommard 5, 777 and 23.

2005 Pinot Noir
Sonoma County

I first made Pinot Noir as a home winemaker in 1985. I have been employed at Rochioli Winery since 1990 and worked the 1988 & 1989 crush, and have been Cellar Master at Rochioli fo ...morer the last twelve years. I created the Castalia label in 1992. The 2005 vintage produced 326 cases. The wine was kept for 15 months in oak, 30% new, all French. This has given the wine a much softer feel at release. As always the wine is 100% from the Rochioli vineyards. 50% is from the River Block and the rest is from an 18 year-oldblock (of the West Block clone) that I feel is even better than the River Block. This wine should age for at least ten years and be in it’s prime in from 4 to 7 years. Castalia Pinot Noir possesses the full-bodied complexity and subtle cherry essence that are so typical of the finest Russian River Pinot Noirs. Many fine restaurants in the greater Bay Area have recognized that reputation by serving Castalia Pinot Noir year after year. I am pleased to now offer a limited quantity of our most recent vintage to the general public.

The 2002 Cohn Vineyard Pinot Noir reflects the evolution in the reductive, fruit forward style that is sweeping California Pinot producers. We have two other Pinots, the Jemrose Vineyard, Bennett Valley, which is even more fruit centric than is the '02 Cohn and an Ashton Vineyard, Sonoma Valley, that is floral and spicy.

Sonoma Valley

The 2005 Estate Pinot Noir is a nice counterpoint to our 2004. We were able to ripen our small crop slowly and evenly, experiencing our longest hangtime per pound produced in the R ...moreanch's history. This wine has a medium-plus color with a touch more black fruit than in years past. The aromatics have the now traditional high-toned red and orange fruits plus blackberries, cloves and cinnamon. Palate-wise, the berry/cherry combination shows through immediately, uninterrupted by oak or tannin.

Sonoma Coast

The 2004 Sonoma Coast comes from a single site in the far west corner of Sebastopol. A mix of red and black fruits with the classic coastal cola/forest floor aromatics, this wine has really blossomed with an extrea year in bottle. 2004 Cactus Hill Pinot Noir
Sonoma Valley

In putting together the 2004 Cactus Hill, we leaned heavily on the cooperages that worked successfully with the raw material more than clones that were the strongest for the vintag ...moree. Remond came to the forefront in ’04 along with Cadus and Francois Freres. The completeness of clone 667 became the anchor for the blend with 777 adding a nice cola/sassafras spice and 115 providing some additional muscle. The combination of the three clones produces the now classic black tea/cranberry spice that dominates the Pinots from this property.
