Pinot Noir

Pinot noir is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name may also refer to wines produced predominantly from pinot noir grapes. The name is derived from the french words for pine and black alluding to the varietals tightly clustered dark purple pine cone shaped bunches of fruit.

Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. In De re rustica, Columella described a grape variety in Burgundy in the 1st century A.D. that sounds like Pinot noir. It is widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, but is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine.

Cohn Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is a pleasure to enjoy on its own, it will also fare well with a wide range of entrees, complementing dishes such as lamb, duck or grilled salmon.

The long, cool 2006 growing season enabled extended hang time in our great array of pinot vineyards, developing the ebullient fruit and rich structure that Russian River is so priz ...moreed for. Its aromatic lushness immediately distinguishes our â€˜06 Dutton Ranch Pinot offering, with succulent black cherry, blackberry and cranberry aromas fairly leaping out of the glass. With time, the undertones of Asian spice and a slight smokiness creep in for support. In the mouth, the wine follows with the expected vibrant cherry and cranberry fruit, but really fills out with darker blackberry and coffee undertones. True to the Dutton-Goldfield style, the wineâ€™s fresh acidity and moderate alcohol facilitate the clean berry finish. At this stage of its life this is a beautiful wine to pair with fresh cheeses and rich fish dishes, but in a few more years it will be a perfect truffle risotto or smoked quail match.

The 2006 Branciforte Ridge is, we believe, a classi ...morec example of Santa Cruz Mountain Pinot Noir (which have been made here since the 60s) with fruit, structure, mouthfeel and a long finish woven into one sustained, harmonious whole. We harvested at an ideal ripeness with balanced tannins and acidity that the mountain climate promotes. Bright cherry, raspberry and even some cherry blossom come through on the nose, and are supported in the mouth by a firm foundation of minerality, crushed rocks and redwoods. For a delicate and subtle wine, there is a substantial body and mouthfeel. Silky tannins and firm acidity play strongly on the mid-palate and carry a the beam of that bright red fruit through to a long, lingering finish. This wine has evolved substantially during barrel aging and will surely continue to do so for some time yet in the bottle. Enjoyable now, it will further integrate and develop with several years in your cellar.

This is an accessible Pinot Noir in its youth, but will develop nicely over the next 3-4 years.

The cool growing season in 2006 and the extremely late harvest produced a wine with strong notes of raspberry and strawberry. It was aged in 33% new oak for ten months. This is an elegant, classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. This wine will pair well with game, duck and salmon as well as mushroom accented dishes.

In the future it may become our first vineyard designated pinot. The remainder (47%) of the fruit is from two clones (828 and 777) of the Sleeping Beauty Vineyard, which is owned and farmed by George Martinelli.

2003 Pinot Noir, Amour Fou

The 2003 Amour Fou represents a style very similar to the 02. The blend is comprised of 70% Keefer Ranch and 30% George Martinelli. The color is a deep magenta, with flashes of red ...more and rose at the rim. The nose has that end of summer butter crust cherry and plum pie character that made the 02 so popular and so controversial. The mouth-feel is very rich, eschewing subtlety for pure pleasure. We recommend drinking this over the near term with something substantial â€“ wild game, grilled duck breast or a thick pork chop with a fig, cherry or cranberry glaze. Or drink it all by itself when you need a shot of unbridled, guilty hedonism.

The wine spent a total of 16 months in 60% new French oak. Thereâ€™s nothing shy about Amour Fou. It is big, bold and rich. The color is a deep plum red, with a bit of rose at the edges. The nose is very â€œredâ€ â€“ frais de bois, ripe plums, cherries, vanilla and butter crust. The flavors, as we said, are quite rich. Imagine an end of the summer pie filled with red plums, strawberries, rhubarb, and cherries.
