2007 Sri RosÃ©

The 2007 Sri RosÃ© is a prelude of things to come as 2007 was a great vintage here in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Made from some very good Syrah sourced from our two favorite vineyar ...moreds, the Sri RosÃ© has significant weight in the mouth with that crisp, refreshing acidity that carries the fruit across the palate. One can pick up exotic notes of pineapple, lichee fruit, jasmine, poached pear and minerality on the nose. The surprisingly long finish has a richness and structure one doesnâ€™t usually associate with or expect from a RosÃ©. Barrel fermented in used French oak with indigenous yeast fermentation. Sri RosÃ© is a handy wine to have around for the coming of summer.

The resulting wine shows the tremendous lushness and vibrancy for which zin is so prized, while maintaining an elegant balance not often seen in the varietal. This is a wine that is consistent from first sniff to the long, deep cherry finish. Throughout, it shows depth, dark enticing fruit, and soft candied overtones. In the nose, the black cherry, toffee and floral notes draw you in. In the mouth, its cherry and boysenberry fruit give a real perception of sweetness, enhanced by soft tannins and spicy wood notes. Its moderate alcohol allows the freshness and complexity of this wine to shine through, as well as helping it to be excellent for pairing with anything from pasta dishes and roasted meats to Parmesan and Manchego cheese and dark chocolate brownies.

Its dry-farmed, head-trained 1.8-acre block is all thatâ€™s left of a vineyard planted by the areaâ€™s early Italian settlers over 100 years ago. Left unfarmed for years, the Duttons (with prodding from Dan) revived the vineyard in 1995 and its fruit now enables us to provide this special limited bottling of old vine Zinfandel. Its cool proximity to the coast gives us a Zin of exceptional brightness and moderate alcohol; its hilltop perch facilitates the ripeness for wonderful fruit density and lush tannins; and its age gives us the personality that makes the wine truly special.

This wine certainly ranks among the most powerful, rich and balanced Cabernets that we have made. It is both elegant and solidly proportioned. This very aromatic and beautiful wine ...more calls upon aromas of black currant, lead pencil, coco, and well-integrated vanilla notes. It is rich and silky, with sweet ripe tannins and a solid core that begs for some bottle age.

The flavors are consistent with the nose having deep red and black fruit flavors, well-integrated oak, great balance and refinement. There is a fine persistence of flavor that is long lasting. It is delicious now but will gain complexity and finesse with time. Expected maturity 2008 through 2015.

2005 Howell Mountain Merlot is a monster! Bursting with huge mountain black fruit and silky tannins, this wine is very rare - only 200 cases made. Last year's Merlot received 93 ...more Points from Wine & Spirits Magazine straight out of the gate, so this ones sure to be a quick mover and a delight to all who take her home.

The mouthfeel shows off the luscious mountain fruit, while the silky tannins remind you of earth and chalk - typical Howell Mountain trademarks. The nose is intense, with aromas of blackberries, provencial herbs, and the usual hints of mushrooms, chalk and earth that our wines always turn up. The finish tracks the aromas and palate with the addition of just a hint of spicy oak - and cinnamon, and the wine is so firm and balanced, you only notice the oak as the gentle, "velvet glove" holding it all in place.
