2005 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon

Rapid ripening in mid-summer slowed considerably by September with mild weather prevailing through harvest. Picking began on October 7th - the grapes were very small and the crop l ...moreevel low, focusing intensity in the resulting wine. The clusters were loosely set, with fewer-than-average berries, and many contained only one seed rather than the typical two to four seeds. The modest set meant the grapes enjoyed good exposure to the dry mountain air and strong sunlight at altitude, with fruit ripening quickly in perfect autumn weather. Sugars averaged 27 Brix at harvest while the acidity held at 3.40 pH with 6.8g/L tartaric acid.

The grapes were hand selected from the best Cabernet vines at La Ribera Vineyards which border the Russian River and Morrison Creek in the warm Ukiah Valley. The wine was fermented ...more in closed top stainless steel tanks and pumped over 3 times a day for flavor and color extraction. A short 4 day extended maceration was employed post dryness. The wine was then nurtured in a collection of 75% new French oak barrels for 15 months.

The resulting wine has aromas of cassis, black currant and leather with a hint of eucalyptus. It is deep Bordeaux red in color with rich berry and cocoa flavors. The tannins are firm, allowing for optimum aging potential.
