CASK 23, made only in exceptional vintages, is usually a blend of the most distinctive fruit from our S.L.V. and FAY estate vineyards. The story of CASK 23 began during the harvest ...more of 1974. Back then, winery founder Warren Winiarski enlisted the help of celebrated winemaker AndrÃ© Tchelistcheff. As they tasted through various lots of new wines from that year, they noticed a distinct character in a lot from the center of Block 4, a character they described as â€œcrushed violetsâ€. It was so appealing that they decided to age this wine separately in a wooden cask, number 23. The wine was still so deliciously distinct after further aging in barrel, Warren decided to bottle it separately and give it a special nameâ€”CASK 23.

Warren knew, insta ...morently, that he had found what he was searching forâ€”classic elements of fruit and structure, suppleness and balance. It was a style that Warren refers to as â€œan iron fist in a velvet glove.â€ As luck would have it, an adjoining prune orchard was for sale. The Winiarskiâ€™s purchased the land and planted a vineyardâ€”now known as S.L.V.â€”and soon after, Stagâ€™s Leap Wine Cellars was born.

The majority of the grapes come from the 9.5 acres of Cabernet planted on the winery estate located one-third mile north of Oakville Cross Road on Money Road . Approximately 10% of ...more this fruit came from prime grapes grown in Rutherford by our late friend, Reg Oliver, of Star Vineyards. Our soils are of the Pleasanton and Bale loam series with some spots of silt and gravel. Rootstock is Teleki 5C on a 6 x 12 ft. spacing. The vines are head trained and cane pruned using a three vertical trellis system for fruit and canopy support and unirrigated on older vines, all dry-farmed.
